In H. Beam Piper's "The Cosmic Computer", they're salvaging an old trove of military supplies. One detail that stuck with me is one of the salvagers mentally reconstructing the events that took place in an office at the end of the war, how the officers drank a final toast and smashed their glasses against the wall before shuttering the facility.http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/20727
