I have just finished reading cory doctorow's @pluralistic "the bezel" In the acknowledgments he says that the greatest boon an author can receive is an honest reaction from one reader to another.
I strongly recommend that you read it. The library files it under fiction and while technically that might be reasonable this book positively hums with realism. I began to wonder if Cory indulges in some of the activities so carefully described here. But the book is not just about 1/n

Just finished the audiobook of @pluralistic's second Marty Hench novel, #TheBezzle.
(Full disclosure: @WilWheatonRSS reads my name at the end because I was publicly enthusiastic about #RedTeamBlues, the first Marty Hench novel, on social media. If you haven't read it, add it to your queue. It doesn't matter which order you read them in.)
"It's complicated" is the most accurate non-spoily way to describe it. I also finished it waaay too quickly.
You will especially like it if you enjoy people talking about their passions. They may or may not align with your passions, and it doesn't matter because you /want/ to know more.
I like Marty. I have yelled at him for doing stupids, but I'm a geezer and sometimes it's about #experience, not brainpower.
He would be a cool person to know, and not because of his professional skillset, rather, because he's ... interesting.
In this book, I discover that I am not alone in this opinion. I also rediscovered that his #heart is bigger than his head.
There's #sex, #drugs. and .... #soul ... in this story. It's fictional, but packs a /lot/ of #fact. You can easily believe stuff could happen that way. And some of it did, though without Marty's participation.
I backed the #kickstarter; you can find the #audiobook on Libro.fm and support your local bookstore /at the same time/. You can also get the #ebook or a print copy in the usual places.

The Bezzle
by Cory DoctorowSo, if you've read my other book reviews this year, you'll be familiar with the name Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic). If not, become familiar! His work (published in books, delivered by RSS feed or Xitter, or appearing on various websites) is always entertaining and informative.
The infotaining nature of his writing is clearly evident in his latest book: The Bezzle. I backed the Kickstarter that successfully funded an audiobook version, although audiobooks aren't my thing and I read it in eBook form on my Pixel 6a. It's the second Martin Hench book, a period piece starting in the dotcom boom era, years before the first Hench book, Red Team Blues. Here we see a less established Martin (sans tour bus) stepping unwittingly into the attention of a sleazy robber baron. Events spiral wildly away from a burger-supply Ponzi scheme (no, really) as the book progresses.
The book structure is a little odd; it felt like the pelt of two-and-a-half Last Week Tonight With John Oliver episodes stitched onto the bones of a modern-day Grisham novel. Here the blend of entertaining and informative comes to bear; you know you're being educated as you read, but it's enjoyable, so it doesn't feel like a lecture. There's lessons about MLM investment traps, the hideous state of the California prison-for-profit system, unfair music royalty practises, and more.
The Bezzle was a quick and excellent read, and I'll be delving more into Doctorow's back catalogue as the year progesses, thanks to a tasty Humble Bundle deal that's still active as I write.

Yesterday I purchased The Bezzle ebook from https://www.craphound.com. I started reading it and couldn't put it down. It is riveting. It is the second novel with Martin Hench, forensic accountant. Martin works on the Red Team looking for mistakes made by crooks and fraudsters and he's very good at it. This time he's helping out a good friend who's the victim of bad luck and bad laws.
Doctorow makes use of current events in his plot so at times I felt almost physically ill when I considered the corruption and exploitation that occur in reality that are used to set up the story in the fictional "The Bezzle." It deals with serious topical issues and yet it is still manages to be fast moving and fun at times.
I strongly recommend this book. -

Martin Hench is a self employed forensic accountant that plays on the Red team, the attackers, and he's really good at it.
"They have to make zero mistakes; I just have to find one error. They have to be perfect; I just have to be systematic. It’s why I play the red team. Advantage to the attacker, as always.”
His latest job, however, has put him in jeopardy and on the defensive - on the Blue Team - and he hates it, until a good friend sets him straight.

Which brings me to the idea of #TheBezzle. This is #JohnKennethGalbraith's term for "the weeks, months, or years that elapse between the commission of the crime and its discovery." This is the period in which both the criminal and the victim feel like they're better off.
