Mapuche Political Prisoners Begin Hunger Strike
Pressure escalates in the Quilleco Case: Mapuche community members on indefinite hunger strike to demand the annulment of the trial, due process, and urgent improvements at the Temuco Correctional Center.
The Quilleco Case adds a new chapter of pressure. According to a document received by this newsroom, Mapuche political prisoners have begun an indefinite hunger strike and are targeting the January sentence, accusing the court of violating due process.
In the document, the community members communicate “the current state” of their situation and emphasize that the measure is not symbolic: they demand the annulment of the guilty verdict, call for respect for due process, and, furthermore, raise once again the issue of the prison conditions in the Mapuche community member module at the Temuco Penitentiary Center (CCP).
Indefinite Hunger Strike in the Quilleco Case: The Demands of the Mapuche Political Prisoners
The statement reads:
“Through this statement, we wish to communicate the current situation of ourselves, the Mapuche political prisoners in the Quilleco case, who today, February 16, 2026, began an indefinite hunger strike demanding the following:
1. The annulment of the guilty verdict in which we were sentenced on January 20, 2026, in the Los Ángeles Criminal Court, to 15 and 17 years in prison.
2. Respect for due process and an end to political convictions.
3. Improvements in prison conditions within and for the Mapuche community members module at the Temuco Correctional Center.”The text frames the hunger strike as a response to a conviction that, they assert, was handed down in an environment unfavorable to the defense and with a pattern of criminalization that is not new to Mapuche and social organizations that have followed the case.

En Temuco en un sector residencial normal como sea Campos Deportivos o Fundo el Carmen, el límite de velocidad es una prohibición. Pero en el sector San Martín Los Urbanistas, donde los ricachones y latifundistas coleccionan autos y cavan zanjas para cerrar vías públicas, el límite de velocidad es una "sugerencia".
Con candidatos presidenciales neonazis, negacionistas, crías del pinochetismo o dueños de nueve propiedades, eso no va a cambiar.

"Actualmente, los peñi José Arzola y Dago Queipul llevan adelante una huelga de hambre que se extiende por 38 días, siendo el caso más dramático el del peñi José Arzola, quien no está ingiriendo alimentos ni líquidos, por lo que pone en riesgo su vida. Los peñi, con esta forma radical de protesta, exigen la nulidad de su juicio, en donde fueron condenados a presidio perpetuo más 11 años en el caso de José Arzola, y 10 años para el peñi Dago Queipul, la pena más alta para un menor de edad. Juicio que se sustentó principalmente en la figura de testigos protegidos y colaboradores de la fiscalía, donde tampoco se consideró ni ponderó la prueba presentada por la defensa. Yesterday (28) a score of hooded people mobilized in a new commemoration of a black August where they vindicated the Mapuche comrades, Macarena Valdés, Rodrigo Melinao and Jaime Collio, the student murdered by the cops, Manuel Gutierrez and the deceased anarchist comrades, Luciano Pitronello, Luciano Balboa and Belén Navarrete.
On the other hand, they also mobilized in rejection of the peace and understanding consultation in la Araucanía, which is being held today, Saturday, August 30.
The action ended with a confrontation with cop personnel, who were received with incendiary devices, paint and pyrotechnics.

STATEMENT BY MAPUCHE POLITICAL PRISONERS OF THE TEMUCO PRISON.
The Mapuche Political Prisoners held in the Temuco prison salute our ancestral authorities Lonko, Machi and Werkenes, our pu Weichafe who resist in Wall Mapu, for the defense of our itrofil mogen. To the conscious and rebellious society we communicate the following:
We have come to denounce the gendarmerie of Chile, which has increased the level of harassment against the P.P.M., to the point of ignoring the judicial rulings that have favored our peñi prisoners. In a clear violation of the law, acting illegally, outside their own law and in a clear example of political persecution against our people.
The facts that demonstrate the above are as follows:
Kiñe: The peñi Fredy Marileo, requested and won in court his transfer from the Temuco prison to the Angol prison closest to his lof. This transfer granted by the courts has been ratified on 3 occasions, but to date it has not been carried out. Understanding that the gendarmerie can no longer appeal this judicial ruling. Keeping the peñi away from their people illegally.
Epu: On Thursday, July 25, after the death of the mother of the peñi Daniel Canio Tralcal, the court of guarantee of Temuco, authorized the departure of the peñi to his lof for a margin of 3 hours, to participate in the eluwun (Mapuche ceremony). A solution that never materialized, since the Chilean gendarmerie did not make it effective.
In a clear display of racism and harassment against our peñi. We consider this to be an extremely serious event, so much so that our peñi was deprived of being able to say goodbye to his ñuke.
Küla: Another serious event that is happening at this time is the illegal detention of our peñi Luis Tralcal Quidel, who to date is deprived of liberty. When there are 3 judicial rulings, which restore the benefit of the daily outing, a benefit that was arbitrarily taken away by the Chilean Gendarmerie.
All these events that have been taking place are a clear example of the offensive against the Mapuche movement and today in prisons the systematic harassment of the p.p.m.
The Gendarmerie of Chile is an auxiliary entity of the judiciary whose function is to enforce judicial rulings. Today we see with concern how this repressive apparatus is breaking its own law, which has already been brutal against the Mapuche autonomy movement.
Today, from the P.P.M. module of the Temuco prison, we make a call to denounce these serious events that have been happening in recent times and we urge all the P.P.M. held in different prisons installed in Wall Mapu to unite their efforts to create an initiative of nütrankagün.

Temuco Court Ratifies Acquittal of 17 Mapuche Political Prisoners
The court ruled out malice, charged lack of evidence and reaffirmed that the conflict in the Angol prison was exaggerated: a new defeat for the set-up and criminalization of the Mapuche people.
The Court of Appeals of Temuco rejected on Tuesday the appeals for nullity filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and Gendarmerie of Chile, confirming the sentence handed down on February 7 by the Oral Criminal Court of Angol, which acquitted 17 Mapuche community members accused of the crime of aggravated kidnapping to the detriment of Gendarmerie personnel.
The ruling, which represents a new setback for the attempts at judicial criminalization against the Mapuche communities, ratifies the innocence of the community members, dismissing an unsubstantiated accusation that tried to transform a prison conflict into a criminal case of high political and media impact.
A disproportionate accusation
The events date back to May 2023, when a group of Mapuche prisoners from the communal module in the Angol prison were accused of having held gendarmes against their will who were trying to carry out a procedure to register visits. The prosecution argued that this alleged “retention” constituted a crime of aggravated kidnapping, a serious criminal offense, which carries high penalties.
From the outset, relatives and organizations denounced that it was a new attempt at judicial set-up, instrumentalized to deepen the criminalization of the Mapuche people in Wallmapu, in a context of permanent militarization and media stigmatization.
The ruling that dismantles the story
In its ruling (role 234-2025), the Third Chamber of the Court of Appeals of Temuco ruled out that the court of first instance had committed errors of law or had improperly evaluated the evidence.
“Having examined the judgment under appeal, this Court can find that (…) the Public Prosecutor’s Office could not determine the facts for which the defendants were accused,” the resolution states.
In addition, the appellate court emphasized that neither intent nor convergence of wills, essential elements to configure a kidnapping, were proven. On the contrary, it was found that the community members had no possibility of leaving the module, so the fact should never have been prosecuted.
Political prisoners and delayed justice
The 17 Mapuche people acquitted are: Juan Ignacio Cortés Penchulef, Simón Alejandro Huenchullán Millanao, Pedro Sebastián Palacios Cañuta, Juan Patricio Queipul Millanao, Jorge Froilán Palacios Cañuta, Ismael Elías Fritz Ñancul, Anthoni Luciano Torres Toro, Alejandro Andrés Liguén Venegas, Boris Mariano Llanca Nahuelpi, Joaquín Wenulef Huenchullán Queipul, Fabián Alejandro Llanca Nahuelpi, Hanthu Lemunthu Llanca Quidel, Miguel Ángel Torres Toro, Freddy Jonathan Marileo Marileo, Sergio Isaías Huentecol Melinao, Joaquín Ismael Millanao Queipul and Máximo Iván Queipul Huenchullán.
Of them, Sergio Huentecol was the only one convicted, but only for the crime of mistreatment of the gendarme, with a sentence of 61 days in prison.
The rest were acquitted of all charges, reaffirming that the core of the indictment — the alleged kidnapping — was a failed attempt to fabricate culprits.
The political and media background
As happened in other emblematic cases, such as that of the Tralcal cousins or Operation Hurricane, this case was massively publicized prior to the trial, promoted by right-wing parliamentarians and institutional spokespersons.
An attempt was made to install the image of a violent and radical group, without any evidence to support that narrative. The trial, however, once again highlighted how the judicial system is used as a tool for preventive punishment against indigenous peoples, through the use of prolonged pretrial detention, long processes, and oversized accusations.
A reflection from the defense
Asked about it, lawyer Javier Pineda Olcay, defender of several of the acquitted community members, reflected on the impact of this ruling:
“This sentence is important, because the Mapuche people face a process of permanent criminalization, and this ruling is an oasis in the desert. In this case, Gendarmerie personnel – with media support from right-wing parliamentarians in the area – tried to pass off a daily prison conflict as an attempted kidnapping, which was completely absurd. Fortunately, the court applied the law and decreed the acquittal. However, a greater challenge remains: that the courts always act in accordance with the law and do not continue to convict community members just because they are Mapuche.”
