  1. «Havel understood exactly the kind of threat that capitulation to technological determinism posed to a humanist form of political association. “Technology,” he wrote, “is out of humanity’s control, has ceased to serve us, has enslaved us and compelled us to participate in our own destruction.” This is far truer now in a world dictated by the speculative whims and libertarianism of Silicon Valley than it was in 1978.»

  6. A lot of “will be” that should be “could be” in there…

On one hand, parts of the piece are a nice example of futures scenario writing.

On the other hand, using speculative fiction to make predictions, especially when the output is just one vision of the possible dressed up as the probable, this shit closes off our imaginations and robs us of our agency. It’s not wonder so many people feel they have little to no influence on what futures may emerge when this is the genre of futuring they see most.

  21. @punkonbus1701 actually, I’d do a complete opposite take on #BattlestarGalactica where mastodon users are like cylons evolving and figuring out how to migrate from space to space without account death 😂

not that I subscribe to any kind of #technodeterminism but in most #scifi #narratives the “robot” characters are quite explicitly the “better humans” (also what I wrote an article on) 😜

And, I don’t feel the least bit threatened by the bird site 😀 #fediverse was before and will be after…
