CW: Essential Tax Changes & Politics
Introducing a $15k tax-free threshold (excluding top income earners) and increasing our top tax rate to help fund it - would be a game changer in the current political landscape. National would be politically wedged - such a move would be esp popular amongst low and middle income NZers.
In addition, a windfall profits tax targeted at banks, supermarkets and energy companies would be highly politically palatable for a Labour Gvt.

Childcare package is good from Labour, but it’s not the game changer required.
Tax-free threshold up to $15k is.
So is changing top tax brackets + introducing a Windfall Profit Tax profit on energy co’s/banks/supermarkets etc. Both measures would help fund a tax-free threshold.
Use the 2020 mandate and unprecedented majority for truly bold action, or lose in 2023.
