Gina Rinehart suddenly deciding taxes are terrible when they touch gas profits is peak billionaire logic. If windfall taxes are “unfair,” maybe the real issue is letting multinational fossil fuel giants pocket our natural wealth while everyone else cops the costs. Tax the windfall, fund public services, and stop pretending “energy security” means corporate security.
The AFR can bang the drum against a gas windfall tax all it likes, but it’s worth remembering its parent company has big shareholders who may benefit from mining and resource profits. That doesn’t prove the argument is wrong, but it does make the billionaire panic look a lot less convincing.

This time it's narrower (just gas + thermal coal windfalls, not all mining), Treasury-modelling quietly pre-budget, and public anger at $2+ petrol + war-driven prices gives cover. No ad war yet, and Greens/unions are pushing hard.
But the gas lobby's already grumbling. If Albo goes too hard without buy-in, history could rhyme. Fingers crossed they learn from Rudd's fall and thread the needle: tax the windfalls properly, fund Aussies, don't get knifed. -

A #WindfallProfitTax / #ExcessProfitTax / #WindfallTax has been introduced in several countries, including #Britain.Cheap #PublicTransport would have a asymmetrically benefitial impact on low-income households. They would lower inner-city rents, as much more workers would be able to live in more distant suburbs (like in #SanFrancisco and #NYC).
The wealth of big home real-estate owners would be adversely affected, as prices would drop there... -

A #WealthTax, a steep #CarbonTax, in particular for private trips to space, and an #ExcessProfitsTax / #WindfallProfitTax / #WindfallTax of at least 50% would go a long way to pay for a state-of-the-art #PublicTransport and #HealthSystem...
