Overalls with embroidered pocket starting to take shape! Piecing the pants together is especially nerve-wracking, as there are 8 panels, and I'm doing it lined in flannel. And I haven't sewn a pair of pants in about 30 years.
I've been worried about attaching the wrong pieces to each other. But so far, so good.

Finished the pasha's tent tatreez! It took about 2 months of steady work. Plan is for it to be the front pocket of some overalls I'm sewing.

TIL #vyshyvanka is the traditional #embriodery of #Ukraine. i have been a bit obsessed with it. in #nyc you could find a lot of clothes with their distinct #redwork, but their needlework is in other colors, especially #blackwork.
btw: Palestinian’s #needlework is also incredible. #Tatreez is some of the most beautiful wearable art from the Middle East.
it guts me gringos want to destroy these two cultures; which have some of the oldest and most beautiful artisanal traditions.

I’ve been working on this cross stitch that started out as a traditional pashas tent design. But I decided to expand it by extending the lines out and around.
Now I realise it’s resembling a QR code. Which is having me thinking about a future QR code cross stitch. 🤔

Embroidery work in progress
I sewed some overalls last month. They have a very generous pocket on the front bib, which seems perfect for adding some embroidery.
I picked a page from the book "Palestinian Embroidery", by Widad Kawar and Tania Nasir.
I'm just doing a corner of this panel.

Tatreez is much more than a pattern embroidered onto fabric.
Tatreez is صمود – steadfastness and resistance.
For generations, Palestinian women have captured their lives in every single stitch.
They drew inspiration from nature, architecture and their everyday lives and translated all of this into beautiful embroidery patterns.
In this way, they preserved their culture by holding on to what was familiar and safe to them.
Every Tatreez pattern is a piece of history – a fragment of a person's life told through threads and colours.
When we learn Tatreez, we are not just learning a traditional craft. We are upholding a tradition and honouring our ancestors.
Let's keep this tradition alive together and embark on a traditional journey through time into the world of tatreez with a warm drink and a delicious cake. 🪡🫒🍰☕️

📣Aufruf: https://asanb.noblogs.org/?p=15179 - @generation.palestine

Today @neo and me got our https://resolutergl.com/ sneakers with #handmade #embroidery from #palestine ( #tatreez ).
They're amazingly comfy (we've already walked a lot with them). The only downside is that the fancy shoelaces (the ones that cost extra) have metal tips that trigger metal detectors, so they're not practical for court and such. -

Tatreez is inextricably tied to the history and culture of the Palestinian people. Tatreez designs and the colors employed communicate information about the stitcher: their village, marital status, and social class and position. For instance, traditionally, unmarried women stitched with blue thread, married women stitched with red thread, and widowed women stitched over red thread with blue thread.https://egausa.org/embroidery-techniques-from-around-the-world-tatreez/

The origins of Tatreez embroidery can be traced back 3,000 years ago, when Palestine was known as Canaan. “Tatreez” comes from the Arabic word tarza, which means “stitch.”

The designs once served almost like an identification card. The rooster, an ancient Christian symbol, indicated the bearer’s faith. A red bird on a blue-threaded tunic worn by widows meant the woman was ready to remarry. An image of a particular plant or fruit suggested the origin of the garment, such as orange blossoms adorning the tunics of Jaffa or cypress trees on those from Hebron.https://palestine.com/threads-of-identity-tatreez-the-handcrafted-palestinian-embroidery/7264/
