  1. I was interested to find out a bit more on how #GNUTaler is different from #Monero, and how it can be used positively for financial interactions, as well as what impact different design choices have on the usage.

This article is quite insightful in that it provides some narrative around traditional fiat systems (banking, credit card companies, etc.) vs. Bitcoin vs. Monero and finally vs. GNU #Taler.

So, Taler is more geared to replace current payment systems as opposed to putting forward a new currency. Talers are issued by banks, and can be cashed out by banks again. They are pegged to the 'source currency' (e.g. $ or EUR) and thus just a transaction token for fiat money. But as opposed to credit cards or PayPal, they don't record source **and** destination, so they are more private. And they can assure that the recipient (destination) – upon cashing out – can be taxed. So the big guns don't avoid taxes, while everyone else has to carry their burden.

Now, we'd need to get our governments to give GNU Taler a try (as it won't undermine their sovereignty in monetary control matters). But this is likely a pipe dream, as currently governments are **more** aiming for control/surveillance, and thus are gravitating to CBDCs (central bank digital currencies) like the Digital Euro. Putting us under more surveillance, control and censorship ... like some countries are already doing (e.g. China).

Sorry for the long rant ...

And thanks to @gelbphoenix for igniting an interest into looking more into this technology.

  2. Book chapter on Taler as sCBDC technology (the 's' meaning synthetic)

ive not read the chapter yet but that seems like a dumb distinction.... why not just sDC (ie. synthetic digital currency). why conflate it with central banks? found the link via gnu's rss feed. dear @gabriel u might be interested.

rms has been suggesting the use of #gnuTaler for a looong time as just a way to help pay for things digitally in a more private way, eg not having to give a credit/debit card, name, address etc. and its a fine use case, iirc #taler is even supported by #btcPayServer lol. i must admit i'm more #fedimint inclined, but for people who just want to interface with a boring (ideally bitcoin-backed) local bank, i dont see any issue with taler, the main hurdle are the trashy "smart"phone themselves not allowing ethical libre firmwares and user freedom.

  3. are there any products/services in production out there successfully using Gnu Taler? Looks really neat, from the website's description  Would be so sweet for a donation page or small shops!

  6. My integration of #GNUTaler with #Tryton/#GNUHealth is done (for quite some time now).

I developed a Tryton module which would allows users to integrate payments with Taler into their webshops, businesses.

This includes the users of GNU Health (which is built on Tryton) and which provides libre alternatives for Hospital Management software, Health Information Systems and Electronic Health Records.

You can check out the respective module from pypi.org/project/trytoncommuni .

He's talking about the importance of preserving #cash money and, additionally, using sound #ecash systems to go digital, too (like by using the @Taler system).
