  1. Part 10
    Bitchu Matsuyama Castle

On my way back I found a "new" manhole cover and a street sign with his own house.

I am always fascinated how some japanese people use every single little spot to put their plants :)

Decided to stroll around a bit in the area.

  3. Part 7
    Bitchu Matsuyama Castle

A private castle, a private cat walker (the gentleman in blue), a private scratching post, and the view!
I want to be a cat!

  6. Part 4
    Bitchu Matsuyama Castle

Just a few more steps and I made it!

What makes that castle special, besides being the castle with the highest elevation, is having one of only twelve remaining original tenshu (main keeps) in the country.

It went even higher and there was the cat again... But the views are incredible.

  8. Part 2
    Bitchu Matsuyama Castle

The path was quite steep in places, with steps that came up to my knees (I'm 190cm tall). How some of the shorter Japanese women managed to get up was a mystery to me, until I discovered there was a shuttle bus for part of the way...

  9. Part 1
    Bitchu Matsuyama Castle

Bitchū Matsuyama Castle is notable as the castle with the highest elevation above sea level in Japan at 430 meters.

So I knew it would be a long way up...

Some others jettisoned ballast along the way, or perhaps they even died on the road, leaving only this behind?!?

  10. Part 13
    Takahashi

There is also a real cat manhole on the street!

After some more english - japanese or japanese english I had to keep going to my next goal where all these cat pictures and cat manholes will start to make sense.

  11. Part 12
    Takahashi

There is also a sedan chair for "small people" in the second house!
And there is a video running about a cat and a manhole cover with a cat.

The lady in the second house also wanted to explain things to me with a note in English while simultaneously speaking Japanese. When I apologized in Japanese for my poor Japanese, I received the reply: "iie iie me Nihongo only sumimasen" - She was so nice :)

  12. Part 11
    Takahashi

In both houses, the weapons are placed on the ceiling near the main entrance, saving space but keeping them within easy reach.

  13. Part 10
    Takahashi

Since she had forgotten to warn me beforehand that there was a samurai doll that moved via a motion detector, she came running again to warn Austria-san (She had previously asked me where I am from, and lacking a name, I became Austria-san :) ).

To be honest, I probably would have been really scared.

  14. Part 9
    Takahashi

According to the lady, the sedan chair is "for small people" in English, but in Japanese (she switched languages frequently) it's for children :)

The left side of the stove is for rice and the right side is for soup because of the shap of the top if I understood correctly.

  15. Part 8
    Takahashi

Inside is also a small "Samurai Museum" as the nice Lady said :)
What looks like a landmine is actually a lantern!

  16. Part 7
    Takahashi

In Bukeyashiki-dori there are two traditional samurai houses to see for 500 ¥ (Orii family & Haibara family)

The lady at the Orii family house was so nice.
She asked me if I could wait a moment (in Japanese) so she could bill the other visitors. Then she came back with a handwritten notepad on which she had written everything down in Japanese & English to give me a quick tour & then run back to her counter.

Raikyū-ji is really a nice place and worth a visit!
The view out of the temple!

  18. Part 5
    Takahashi

From the church I went straight to the temple.
Better to worship one god too many than one too few ;)

Raikyū-ji (頼久寺) is a Buddhist temple with a wonderfull garden.
As there was a ceremony I could not take pictures anywhere or maybe I could but I decided not to do.

  19. Part 4
    Takahashi

I had already planned a route, but thanks to the super friendly tourist office I still managed to get an extra tip!

The Takahashi Christian Church was founded in April 1882.
This church is the oldest existing church in the prefecture and, among Protestant churches nationwide, it is the second oldest after Doshisha University's chapel.

    That was definitely a surprise!

  20. Part 3
    Takahashi

Takahashi is a "small" town with a population of ~27.500 people.

But the small town does have quite a bit of history and sights to see.

    For example:
    Raikyu-ji
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raiky%C5

    Bitshu Matsuyama Castle
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitch%C5

An old street where you can visit two samurai houses.

    Last but not least:
A own anime series which is called Ai Tenchi Muyo!
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ai_Tench!

  21. Part 1
    Takahashi

As written in the morning I went to Takahashi today.

As luck would have it, a special train was running ;)

The Yakumo (やくも) is a limited express train with a very unique design going from Okayama to Izumo.
Look at that bronze colour! That looks amazing!

I went just from Kurashiki to Takahashi but the scenery was absolutely stunning.
