  1. Winding down at Orcfax: a retrospective

    by @beet_keeper

With the recent announcement that Orcfax is heading into operational mode, it’s a bittersweet moment that means our adventure in the web3 space is almost at an end.

Operational mode means that we are finally able to leave the systems that we have created running and publishing content all-day-every-day with minimal monitoring. Our salaries are paused and we won’t receive another paycheck

  2. #SERVICE_UPDATE: [2026-03]-SHAOLIN-ASCENSION

We are moving away from the monolith toward a Tiered Token Architecture. The "Railgun" only fires at the intensity required for the "Fuel" provided.

    Introducing the Three Heavens:
    🏮 Keren (Level 0)
    🏮 Charlotte (Level 1)
    🏮 Shiki (Level 2)

The stack is tiered. The logic is sovereign.

  3. @kdkorte Love this. Has scope for Northern Ireland too. Probably many states in need of this system. Will you be naming it eponymously after yourself, or after the pope, do you think? #politics #systemsArchitecture #catholicism

  4. Stack Overflow Blog writer Isaac Lyman does a run-down of the documents a systems architect might need throughout the software development lifecycle.

His list of go-to documents include the following.

    The Architecture Overview
    The Dev Design
    The Project Proposal
    The Developer Forecast
    The Technology Menu
    The Problem Statement
    The Postmortem

  5. @valthonis I'd submit that it's technically an old world order. I think the system will probably oscillate between the two forms of order at different rates in different territories, albeit over timescales longer than human lifespan. I believe control systems engineers and physiologists call it "hunting behaviour". The tricky thing is the wars that come as one entity wants to wrest power from another. #systemsArchitecture #cybernetics #controlTheory #rayDalio

  6. @cbarbermd On a completely unrelated note, the Simple Sabotage Field Manual is a document written by the Office of Strategic Services in 1944, and is widely available as a PDF online. I cannot recommend it highly enough for history buffs, or people who like seeing beautiful studies of systems architecture. One runs out of superlatives.

  7. My usual passion is photography but I have a long #career in #SystemsArchitecture and design, decades of work with #computers and #networking

I might use this social footing to share a few IT tidbits, because deep down I'm a #nerd and chances are I will be a nerd in passing.

Today's fun link is an ode to cURL.

    Enjoy!

Thaaaatts why people have twatty email signatures! Oh my days. It all makes sense now! It works too, I actively don't want to email them. I stand educated. Thank you <3

I think this tallies with @peterzeihan 's view that competence is not necessarily encouraged to stick around in some leadership circles, when the priority is that the leader be surrounded by "yes people" (rather than those who understand the subject matter and try to explain why something might not be the best idea).

    I hear you.

My favourite (perhaps less jarring?) example is when a court declares they have found someone guilty, and that their threshold of guilt is "on balance of odds".

I look at the lawyers and the witnesses and realise that none of them has studied actuarial or probability mathematics. I wouldn't even trust them to understand a bet on the horses. For a scientist to watch them is like observing a cargo cult. Worse, I am sure, is for a scientist to find themselves on the receiving end of such a court.

I would offer the meagre consolation that you can see the feedback loops that drive them to behave so, where they think themselves to have free will.

  15. But, I have done something that is super cool and I have nobody to share it with, and nothing to show for it besides some passing tests.

github.com/zeyus/liblsl.dart/b (readme is outdated, see tests)

HMU if you're a #softwareengineering , #networkengineering , #systemsarchitecture or #designpattern nerd, I'd love feedback and suggestions for improvement (or just question my sanity)

  20. I'm #JobSeeking!

If you do interesting things in the #DistributedSystems space that aren't predicated on market-based solutionism, I would love to come write #Rust & #JavaScript apps or work on #SystemsArchitecture and infrastructure with you. I also do pretty decent #CareWork and #CommunityManagement in teams which aspire to be human-centered.

I'm especially interested in roles within organizations lead by #queer and #FirstNations peoples and #anarchist groups doing #MutualAid efforts.

  26. Slack’s Migration to a Cellular Architecture

    slack.engineering/slacks-migra

"...we have migrated the most critical user-facing services at Slack from a monolithic to a cell-based architecture over the last 1.5 years. In this series of blog posts, we’ll discuss our reasons for embarking on this massive migration, illustrate the design of our cellular topology along with the engineering trade-offs we made along the way" -- #CooperBethea #slack

  28. “The GO-Science report outlined a shortage of large-scale computing professionals in the UK, ranging from system architects and data engineers, to system operation professionals and software engineers. Compute professionals, such as Research Software Engineers (RSEs) and Infrastructure Engineers, are skilled individuals who can build systems and support users to operate them in the most efficient way. These skills are in high demand in both the public and private sectors. The entire compute community recognises the importance, and scarcity, of technical staff.”

  29. Are any #MastoAdmins running their instances in Azure? I’m learning #Azure #SystemsArchitecture at work and would be curious to know how you guys designed your Azure bits to deliver this kind of service! Bonus points if it’s a relatively large instance (eg, has more than just a few friends on it). Sub and VNet designs, what App and other services you chose to use, weird things you encountered and how you identified and mitigated that weirdness, etc. Anyone want to #shareYouExperience ? 🤗
