SvarDOS
clean boot TPA: 584K
disk usage: 83KWinner: SvarDOS
beats DOS 5.0 by ~3k TPA and uses 33k less disk space by utilizing compression
i find no reason to not use SvarDOS on cramped old 8088 machines
‼️SvarDOS supports FAT32‼️on such machines which you really want once you're throwing ~500mb+ disks at them
compatibility remains to be seen, deriving from the DR-DOS kernel it has historically been good but seems to have passed through some less careful hands which broke things
the DR-DOS tools didn't seem to get a source release, so filling in with other open source bits is an ongoing process
the devs seem to be treating compatibility issues as bugs so report 'em if you find them 🫡

i want to distribute bootable #Citadel-86 floppies that will serve a board on the earliest PCs
i need a smol DOS preferably free
FreeDOS "runs" on an 8088 PC but anyone who's tried knows its slow and unusable
SvarDOS has long tried to cut FreeDOS down for early machines but they recently gave up and revived the DR-DOS kernel
lets try it
there's a screen clear glitch in CGA 🫠

👾 SvarDOS, opensource DOS distro
「 SvarDOS aims to collect available DOS software and make it easy to find and install applications using a network-enabled package manager (like apt-get, but for DOS and able to run on a 8086 PC) 」

Got #SvarDOS installed and online! Tried a different packet driver for the Intel NIC and that worked.

I've just stumbled across #SvarDOS and now I want to give that a try...

@dandylover1 I am both into the development of the #FreeDOS and #SvarDOS distributions. Development is mainly in C and X86 assembly
We have a "talking" version of our SvarDOS distribution for blind persons. It uses the PROVOX screen reader and requires a Braille 'n Speak synthesizer connected to the COM1 port.
I have never used this by myself, and I am not familiar with developing specifically for Braille 'n Speak. So I will ask the people involved about its state and report back. In the meantime, you may give it a try if you are interested.
You may get it at http://svardos.org/

Do you know if it would be possible to put many different #DOS versions (#msdos 4.x-8.x, #FreeDOS 1.4, #SvarDOS ) on a single FAT16 partition, each one in its own subdir (MSDOS5, MSDOS6, FDOS14, etc.) and have a boot loader that’s loading each variant of MSDOS.SYS + IO.SYS (or others) for every DOS version?
Just because FPC community doubts validity of DOSBox (i.e https://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/topic,71748.msg561036.html#msg561036 but not only) and rambling about everything except what I report on their GitLab ( https://gitlab.com/freepascal.org/fpc/source/-/issues/41337 )

I today released Free #FDISK 1.3.10. This fixes some incompatibilities with quirky controller<->disk combinations.
If you encountered disk io errors with FDISK before, please give it a try.
Some specific hardware that caused trouble: 250GB 2,5" Seagate HDD attached via SATA<->IDE bridge to a VIA Aladdin V chipset (Pentium MMX class Super Socket 7 Board).
