For #SundialSunday, this vertical #sundial on Hôtel de la Bertaudière, where privateer Surcouf has lived. Saint-Malo, France.
My calculated true solar time is 12:53 for this photo: not bad!
This sundial is declining slightly southeast.

Don't mind me, I'm just dreaming I was one of Delure's wealthy clients in Paris, commissioning this lovely double #sundial in the 18th c...
The octagonal part is a horizontal sundial, working with the shadow of the tilted edge of the triangle.
The oval is an analemmatic sundial, working with the upright edge of the triangle. The user needs to set the date by sliding the octagon until its edge reaches the current date on the calendar.
These sundials generally have to be oriented along north-south, but this one is self-oriented: rotate it until the shadows of both edges tell the same time. This is possible because the 2 edges have different directions. The sundial then also indicates *true* north.

The hour lines are computed for latitude 42°N (Rome), but if you tilt the sundial you can make it work for higher latitudes. A list of cities with their latitudes is provided. A small graduated arrow helps find the correct angle.

Once you have enthralled your guests with this exquisite object, you can set out on a trip to Europe, carefully folding the sundial into its 8cm case.

All photos from M. Delalande, auctioneer. Dated around 1710-1720. The Adler Planetarium (Chicago) owns another copy.

  11. Passing through the airport today, I overheard someone talking about the mysterious #moondial of #Ballintoy parish church in #NorthernIreland.

I had never heard of a moondial before and it instantly fascinated me. I just found a photo that shows that the front face is a #sundial but the side face is a moondial or #tidal clock.

I need to visit this church and learn more. Moondials must be incorporated into the mythology of #Pelagia, goddess of the moon and the tides!

  13. In 2013, archaeologists from the University of Basel conducting excavations in Egypt's Valley of the Kings unearthed a limestone tile. Initially unremarkable, this piece of rock revealed its historical significance as one of the world's oldest #sundials, dating back to the 13th century BC. "Ra" was developed to bring this 3200 year old artifact back to life.
