I'm sorry your teachers sucked. Some of mine actually encouraged independent thinking, debate as a means of truthseeking, and work as a means of obtaining liberty. Some of them didn't, which is fine - I got to see different perspectives that way. There was definitely limits - my school was no #summerhill, but that's not *all* it has to be about.
My students (albiet in the private education track) explicitly learn not to trust everything authority figures, media or their texts say. -

And the cases are brought before the equivalent of a student magistrate, the position rotating, who has to decide on a fair outcome when students break the rules.
One year some girls raided goodies from the kitchen "larder". They were caught, and brought before a trial of their peers. Their peers decided they had broken the rules and had to be...rewarded 3 pennies for breaking into the kitchen. The girls said that was crazy and that if you rewarded people for sneaking stuff from the kitchen everyone would do it. They refused to accept the reward and never broke into the kitchen again. Public shame of the 'punishment' of accepting 3 pennies from the common purse was enough of an incentive not to do it.
