Sthenonia is a genus of #jellyfish in the family #Ulmaridae. It contains one species making it a monophyletic group, that species is #SthenoniaAlbida. It is located in the #northwestPacific near #Russia in #Pelagic and #subtropical marine environments. It's has a overall disk shape that is 30 cm wide. It has a small #stomach.

To place these findings in a broader context, the newly reported assemblages were analyzed together with other Pleistocene assemblages across the IWP region (Indo-West #Pacific). Only weak geographic and temporal separation was detected, suggesting a relatively #cosmopolitan #community composition in #subtropical waters during the #Pleistocene, likely reflecting low temperature variability despite glacial–interglacial cycles.

This #Florida farmer I follow experienced devastating loss during the unusual cold spell we had last week. It's tough--I think Florida is technically #subtropical. So, while we can get away with growing tropical #plants most years, we know in the back of our minds that a freeze is possible and that we could lose it all. Fortunately, #Sarasota did ok. My plants didn't love it, but they survived. #gardening

It was sunny yesterday and cloudy the day before in that part of Greater Houston I live in, but they had two things I did not like: they were dry days. There should have been snow, ice, frost, or anything involving frozen water. Bwagh, here's hoping that February will bring something rare (and safe) in our subtropical climate.

This blog is a great resource for #Florida gardeners. Cody Cove Farm is in Central Florida, on the Lake Wales Ridge and they seem to be passionate about trying multiple varieties of #tropical and #subtropical cultivars and curating suggestions for the Florida home gardener based on their findings. I just purchased some seeds from their shop and hope to do one of their farm tours this fall.

I took the opportunity of a relatively cool, overcast day to feed the plantain tree. I gave it some chicken manure pellets and compost. Between the semi-regular rainfall and the olla, I haven’t had to hand water at all. I planted this guild of plantains, sweet potatoes and Thai red roselle in March. The largest plantain pup had two leaves on it at the time. I hope to see it flower by the end of the year. #zone10 #gardening #OllasByOsa #Subtropical #Florida #pottery

I planted some seeds this morning and then it finally decided to rain heavily for the first time in many days. Hallelujah! Here’s what I started. I’m #zone10 and this is an awkward time to start seeds—high heat and pest stress—so I have to be selective:
Seminole pumpkin (round two!)
Whippoorwill cowpeas
Rosita eggplant
Everglades tomatoes
Globe amaranth
Pigeon peasI’m jealous of everyone’s cucumbers & big tomatoes. We have to wait until mid fall for that. #subtropical #gardening

Another garden snapshot - the tender corner. Mostly filled with succulents that overwinter in the conservatory - Aeoniums, Aloes, Crassula, Echeveria and Pelargoniums. Some hardy Sempervivums and Sedums. The odd Agapanthus, Lily, Canna and Jasmine. Big Alocasia and Colocasia live in a water-filled Belfast sink and bucket! Just in view is the black summerhouse. More flowers soon but I like the leaf forms.

The median warming in the CMIP6 Multi-Model Ensemble Mean (MMEM) is found to be higher than that in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project—fifth phase (CMIP6 ) MMEM over most of Africa, reaching up to 2.5 K over some regions, with a mixed pattern in terms of precipitation. Chen et al. showed the extremes in CMIP6 are generally an improvement with respect to those given by the models that integrated CMIP5, in particular for the annual maximum of the daily maximum and annual minimum of the daily minimum air temperatures.

moisture levels, future #WetBulb temperatures over Southwest Asia are projected to exceed a threshold for human #habitability. For example, a change in the position and/or strength of the thermal (heat) lows and #subtropical highs over the #MiddleEast and #NorthAfrica will impact the atmospheric circulation and wind patterns locally. This can in turn impact the transport of moisture and the dust/aerosol emissions and transport and hence the atmospheric radiation fields.
