  1. 🤔 Welcome to Doodle Land where "Statecharts" are just glorified scribbles with delusions of grandeur. 🤓 They're still trying to justify their existence since 1987, but hey, at least they're fancier than your average stick figure. 😂

  3. @b0rk A topic (that I am very passionate about) that lacks great guides on how to teach yourself is Statecharts.

Even CS educated people know about state machines, but rarely see how to use them in real projects. IMHO they can be a good programmer's secret sauce.

See statecharts.dev for my humble contribution to this space.

  5. @dabeaz It would have to be when my mentor told me about statecharts. It profoundly changed how I view and write software. I think it's a curse on our profession that we as an industry still produce software with this amount of state bugs. How many programs start working after restarting? It's a travesty.

    I made statecharts.dev/ as a form of ... antidote.

  7. @nova, Statecharts is an example of a low-shine technology. Nobody "sells" or markets it, because nobody makes money off of it. It can, however be immensely useful.

    It permeates some industries, though.

  9. @bitbear @mamund sure. It's a code generator we wrote to support the use case of building operators. It generates the state machine, empty action and guard stubs, and empty tests for them all. All we need to do is fill out what each guard and action do.

It's not quite a silver bullet, though. The complexity is now often in hidden dependencies between actions and guards: an action might depend on data made available by an earlier action.

I'm thinking of how DbC might help here.

  11. @mamund oh man, you should see the code we write for complicated kubernetes reconcile loops. Not an if statement in sight, save for golang's error returns. Dozens of incredibly simple, testable functions, and a statechart that encodes all the logic (that can be verified independently of said functions).

It is a breeze to maintain.

  13. #introduction

Hi, I'm Erik, a #golang programmer from Norway.

I'm all for using #statecharts, so much so that I made statecharts.dev. I have witnessed the rise and fall of #rest, but continue to support restful architecture. I think I'm somehow naturally drawn towards #declarative systems.

Heavily into #kubernetes, #openshift, #kubebuilder professionally (at my employer Stibo DX), and have a sprinkle of #awslambda / #dynamodb in some personal projects.

  15. Tid for #introduksjon:
