SpaceCraft
In all the vast, infinite universe there is no mystery greater or more perplexing than why it took so long for someone to come up with the name “SpaceCraft” after Minecraft launched. Crafting. In Space. SpaceCraft. I mean…Avorion, Starship EVO, Empyrion, what were you even thinking? Too close to faded franchise, Starcraft, maybe? Someone trademarked it early and then didn’t use it for 20 years? Who knows.
Alright, let’s punch some space-trees, people.
Playing the demo makes me want to punch things. But, sadly, not in a good way.
All children dreaming of the stars look up into the vast firmament and dream of becoming a corporate wage-drone, right? Because this game lays it on THICK like a rich banana cream sundae marinated in reeking goat piss. My character “Wins” the chance to become such a slave and even, in an act that made me feel physically ill, goes through a contract sign-up segment before I’m even allowed to fly the ship they’re cheerfully putting me into deep debt with.
Han Solo, Junior Admin Clerk. Make a movie of that, see how far you get!
Then, having made it into space itself I’m tasked with that most thrilling of pursuits – hurting rocks to extract their innards. Mining. Why is it always mining?
Miners on Earth live hard, dangerous lives. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who seeks to join their ranks out of pure fantastical wish fulfilment. It’s crushingly dull, dangerous, monotonous, royally-repetitive busy-work, and I really wish space games would stop offering that up to players. Doing it with a pretty space backdrop does not magically make it exciting!
Okay so in SpaceCraft it’s point the laser at the thing and magnetically absorb the contents, which isn’t in any way difficult but then that raises the other problem in that it’s simply too easy. It’s become a tedious find-n-point-n-click exercise designed to pad out your upgrade progression tree.
Gods, but I hate mining. The grandeur of space ground down to the same shallow exploitation-heavy activity we humans seem unable to escape, even in our fucking escapism.
See in X4? Mining is acceptable because holy blistering fuck I don’t have to be the one doing it. I pay people to do that for me (ostensibly, paying my employees isn’t an actual X4 game mechanic). Point is, someone else is doing the tedium while I’m free to skip off and do more enjoyable and interesting things, like hurting spaceships and extracting their innards.
But not here, at least not in the early game presented in the demo.
Going by the trailers it appears that this game has bolted in some of that Factorio production chain nonsense as well, which might turn some people on but I honestly can’t think of anything worse, it being something I still rail against/struggle with in X4. Visit new planets just to set up an automated resource hub? For entertainment???
It’s safe to say this game is not for me.
I kept looking around at what it was showing me and there were moments where my space-senses perked up, like planetary landings and flying through the volumetric clouds. However, the problem there is scale. They’re too small to be believable as worlds with thick atmospheres. If you can see the curve there’s no way you should be seeing cloud cover. There’s some nice lighting…but I dunno, the whole things feels too arcadey for me. Spoiled by the looks and flight model of Elite Dangerous, this is more in the direction of Astroneer’s sensibility. I can forgive that look in Starship EVO because it still does some things more accurately than this game does, like planetary lighting in space, and it’s worlds are slightly bigger and thus more immersive.
TL;DR: I came away from the whole thing feeling kinda depressed. This is an economy sim set in space, rather than a space game with an economy. Hewing vomit-inducing closely to Corporate culture doesn’t sell the idea to me at all, it makes me want to run in the opposite direction as if a hissing Creeper were hot on my tail. And then there’s Mining, the most pointless time-padding activity in a game next to Eating/Drinking.
Sorry, folks, it’s an Uninstall and try-to-forget from me.

Conversation on discord has me thinking about Traveller again. (Still?)
More precisely, ship sizes. I definitely prefer a smaller ship universe. By MT battleships are 500-700k tons. But even mid CT after high guard things like the Azanti is 60k.
But if we go back to where the Kinunir is a Cruiser at 1,200 tons, and a light mercenary cruiser is 800 tons, what size should we cap battleships and carriers?
