My pick for this week's #MusicWomenWednesday is a rare 1970 video clip of Betty Lavette, performing a song that is nowadays considered a southern soul classic:

The song had been recorded in Memphis, and it was released on the small Silver Fox label, which was run by Lelan Rogers, the brother of country singer Kenny Rogers. The record was a minor R&B hit for Lavette, even if the raunchy lyrics were not deemed suitable for airplay on pop radio stations at the time.
On this recording, she was backed by the Dixie Flyers, who went on to play on many memorable early 1970s sessions after they had relocated from Memphis to Miami.
Peter Nickols has written a very good article on this song, with lots of background information and an interpretation of the lyrics:
There are lots of great versions of this Chips Moman / Dan Penn tune, but Clarence Carter's reading is by far the funniest of them all. It starts with a long, unforgettable, totally off-the-wall spoken intro - but when he finally starts to sing, he does an earnest, powerful version of the song:
