That would be the Tyrolese Weltschmerz bird, Sara Joy.
In addition to that sound, it also has been heard doing nearly every one of Julie Andrews's songs from The Sound of Music.
Bird watchers give extra praise to its rendition of Do Re Mi during mating season.
Edited to add: Despite the geographic obstacles, ornithologists believe the Weltschmerz bird to be the closest living relative to the Norwegian blue parrot -- perhaps explaining its gift for mimicry.

  11. Sound of Music is 60 years old this year. In 1965, WWII was only 20 years in the past.

I saw it later, as a kid, when Naziism was in the living memory of many millions of people. I had a childhood friend whose dad had been a child soldier in the last days of the Third Reich, firing anti aircraft guns for Hitler, before immigrating to the U.S.

Is that really it? That once something like this dies from living memory the horrors disappear? That there is no human institutional memory? Do we really have to relive a certain set of horrors every few generations?

I don't know why my mind drifted off to #SoundOfMusic this afternoon while applying caulk to the new shower, but here we are.

  12. From the film I also learned that fleeing to another country was a heroic option to avoid having to cooperate with fascists, especially if you eloped with your kids' hot young nanny in the process.

Family musicals were different then I guess?

Das ist wohl diese Vielfalt in der musealen Kunst- und Kulturvermittlung.

  16. Maybe it's just me, but "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?", as an exclamation, has always struck me as leaning in the same general direction as "Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?".

  17. I am sorry to do this to you all, but for me it just has to be "My Favourite Things" from the Sound of Music. Call me an old fuddy-duddy if you like, but this is great, extremely "catchy" music.
