  2. I was inspired to try an experiment after reading a recent post by Jason McFadden over at Jason Journals. The title of his post was “A Smartphone Is A Requirement”. That title struck a chord with me. For most everybody I know these days, a smartphone is indeed a requirement. Yet I’m sure I’m not alone in sometimes wishing I wasn’t constantly tethered to my iPhone. I find myself wistfully thinking back to the days before smartphones and how much simpler life seemed back then.

    Complications

I have often thought it would be great to take a break from my iPhone but never really went through with it for a few reasons. For one, I need to have access to my iPhone for work, that is non-negotiable for my position. Another reason is like so many others, my iPhone is my camera. I hate the idea of leaving it at home and miss snapping a picture of one of my boys doing something cute or something else that catches my eye when I’m out and about. These reasons, along with a few others, kept me from pursuing this any further in the past.

    Making It Work

As I said before, Jason’s post made me reconsider this thought that had been lingering in the back of my head. Could I make this work somehow? I settled on the following criteria for my experiment. Since I can’t do this experiment during work, the weekend would have to do. Starting Saturday morning when I wake up, my iPhone will remain on it’s charger until Monday morning when I wake up for work. I still need access to calls and texts, and it would be great if I had a way to take photos if needed. The good news is I currently have the tech to make this happen! I have 3 tools for this experiment that should give me all of the functionality I need.

    • Apple Watch Ultra: I already have and wear the Apple Watch Ultra every day, and I have cellular data on it! This will allow me to make & receive calls, receive and send texts, pay for things with Apple Pay, & listen to music and podcasts. The extra battery capacity in the Ultra will go a long way in making this work as I have found cellular data is a bit harder on the battery.
    • AirPods Pro: I can connect these to my Apple Watch so that longer calls are not awkward. I will also be using them for music when I go on my walks and runs. The fact that these are so small and easy to connect to my Apple Watch makes them a great addition for this experiment.
    • Sony RX100: I picked this up used recently for a great price. Did you know that you can use a camera instead of a smartphone to take pictures!? I know, what a crazy concept! In all seriousness, picking up this small compact camera is what pushed me over the edge to go forward with this experiment. I can now have peace of mind knowing that I can take any photos I need.

    The Experiment

So how did it go? I’m happy to report that it went great! I used my Apple Watch for all of my phone calls and texts, used it for a walk Saturday & a run on Sunday, and used it to pay for things during some shopping on Saturday. The AirPods Pro worked great for music during my workouts as well as for a few phone calls. I sent and received a bunch of texts during the weekend. I mostly used dictation for forming texts as I found that was the most efficient way. The Sony RX100 wasn’t actually used this weekend but it was with me everywhere I went just in case! I did use my iPad some during the weekend when at home for catching up on my reading and web browsing. This experiment was not to stay away from the internet entirely or anything like that, it was simply to get some time away from my iPhone and the constant urge to check it when I’m bored.

    Pros & Cons

I wanted to go over some of the pros and cons of this experiment. While it went great, there were also a few downsides.

    Pros:

    • I definitely felt more present around my wife and kids. The Apple Watch is great because while you can get all of your texts, calls, & important notifications on it, it’s not really fun to browse content on. I found that I got the information I needed from it, but wasn’t tempted to waste any time on it. I found myself being much more involved in conversations with my family, which was a huge plus and the best benefit for sure.
    • I got more stuff done! Not being distracted by my phone forced me to find other (better) ways to spend my time. I got several items I have been putting off doing done, got some good workouts in both days, got some reading done on my Kindle, and helped tidy up our house. It’s surprising how much more time we have when we don’t waste it on our phones!

    Cons

    • I want to acknowledge that not everyone is going to have all of this equipment. I know a lot of people have non-cellular Apple Watches for instance. Having a cellular capable watch was a huge factor in this experiment working for me. I’m guessing you could get around this by buying or using an old dumb phone on the weekends. And you can get a decent compact camera these days for cheap.
    • I did miss the iPhone in a couple of ways. One was not having it when I was driving. Most vehicles, including mine, will not connect to an Apple Watch’s bluetooth for whatever reason. I am used to having either podcasts or music on when I’m driving, so it was disappointing to not have that.
    • Another way I missed having my iPhone was when I bought food at Chick-fil-A on Saturday. I always use their iPhone app when I go there to scan at the register for reward points. Without the iPhone, there was no way to do that. Obviously, this is not the end of the world but it is surprising how many little things we use our phones for everyday. We don’t even think of a lot of them until we are without it.

    Conclusion

In conclusion, I really enjoyed my experiment and I plan to continue doing it for the time being! I feel like the good far outweighed the bad so why not continue to pursue it? Who knows, maybe it will eventually become a habit!

  4. Some more thoughts on #sonyrx100 it’s small but got a nice weight to it. So small it’s fiddly but I’ll take it over a bigger camera. Not done much photography yet 🤪
