Excellent, excellent festival day:
Discovered a couple great young bands that I will definitely be following up with, was part of a Guinness World Record (!?), wandered a contemporary art museum, another killer Wilco show complete with two debuts (!!) and several compelling guest spots and extra silliness, and then a transcendent aftershow zone-out with the sublime Setting. Plus perfect weather, free ice cream and t-shirt-inspired convos with my fellow musicnerds... it's all quite excellent at Solid Sound!

Today I am wearing a YLT shirt from last Hanukkah run (looks like Yellow Submarine) and I have never, ever, even close gotten so many comments on an article clothing ever. From "nice shirt" to several extended conversations.

MassMOCA is a killer spot for a festival, too. And the Wilco crowd is a unique kind of musicnerdery that's rather endearing. Great place to wear the coolest band shirts in your drawer.
Other sets today included Sharp Pins, Gang of Four, L'Rain and DJ set from Ira and Georgia.
Looking forward to tomorrow.

Up at Solid Sound festival this weekend at MassMOCA. Such a great fest on many levels. Tonight's headline was Wilco and Billy Bragg doing Mermaid Avenue and it vastly exceeded my expectations. Just a special, special set. Jeff and Billy were positively beaming. Set really leaned into the Woody G anti-fascist/anti-capitalist bent, show ending with All You Fascists Bound to Lose and then the encore was California Stars > This Land is Your Land with many Guthrie grandkids and great-grandchildren on stage singing along. Natalie Merchant guest appearance and some sweet alt-country Nels Cline. Two remarkable, but very different Wilco shows in one week!

Billy Bragg at #SolidSound sang "Sexuality", switching out "If you stick around, I'm sure that we can find some common ground" for "... I'm sure that we can find the right pronouns" - before giving a passionate defense of trans and nonbinary people. Bless him!

I think this will be my last set of the weekend, but maybe best for last with partners-in-crime Mary Halvorson and Tomas Fujiwara making guitar/drum magic inside, while a storm passes through.

This fest is really midway between Newport Folk and Big Ears as seen through Wilco-colored glasses, except shrunk down considerably to fit in an art museum complex in Western Mass. Wide, diverse music offerings with one of the tightest demographic distributions for a musical gathering of this size. Thankfully I personally fit comfortably in there, so I'm largely loving it and will definitely be back.

So awesome that there's space at this festival for a set like this in the middle of a Sunday afternoon. The live debut of Saccata Quartet, two drums, guitar, and bass. Nels Cline at his most untethered, Chris Corsano Corsano'n pretty hard, Glenn Kotche fully freeform and Darin Grey on no-rules bass. Wild shit, with some moments of serious transcendence, when it only really takes one.

Solid Sound: no overlapping sets, so you never have to choose!
Also Solid Sound: Did I say never? I meant never *except* for the late Saturday slot when you're literally going to have to choose between two of your favorite artists.

Anyone on here going to #solidsound festival? Pretty stoked, despite the iffy weekend forecast. Been wanting to hit this one for a while and finally worked out.
