I'm taking a bit of a social media break until after Labor Day. I'll still occasionally check my DMs on the various platforms that have DMs, and keep up with the basic admin stuff here at the #SnootBBQ. Otherwise I'll catch you all in September.
Don't burn the place down while I'm gone. Well, not this place. Some of the other ones can go.

Mastodon is flooded with spammers today, coming from one of the main Mastodon instances. If you’re on the #SnootBBQ just keep reporting what you see, and I’ll suspend them as they pop up. Hopefully mastodon.social will start doing more on their end to stop this.
-
Friends, please don't use the moderation features on the #SnootBBQ just for personal grudges. I will moderate people who are breaking our server rules, but I'm not going to suspend a user from another instance just because they got in an argument with you.

I’m heading off to Egypt and London for the next four weeks. If you need to reach me, send a note to the pyramids. If I don’t get it when I’m in Egypt, I’ll pick it up in London after the British Museum steals it.
(Please don’t break the #SnootBBQ while I’m gone)

A jewelry company keeps trying to make a Mastodon account at the #SnootBBQ to spam here. This is why I don't just let the server be totally open to all new signups.
That said, if you have film and tv friends who are looking for a place to hang in the Fediverse, please feel free to encourage them to sign up here.

Thank you to everyone on the #SnootBBQ who has chipped in for the fundraising campaign already! In the first day since setting up the Patreon, we have commitments from our users to cover 25% of our monthly server costs. Not a bad start!
If you want to help support our community, here is the Patreon link: https://patreon.com/snootbbq

I have launched a Patreon for the #SnootBBQ Mastodon instance for film/tv folk!
All funds raised from this Patreon will go to funding the operating costs of the Snoot BBQ.
Don't worry, I'll be personally covering any of the costs that aren't covered by the Patreon, but I like the idea of this community being self-funding in the future.
-
I let in a batch of new #SnootBBQ members today! New folks, I advise doing an intro post using the #Introduction hashtag (also, in general hashtags are a helpful thing over here)

Looks like #SnootBBQ has made it to the big leagues, and Twitter are censoring links to our little Mastodon server for film/tv folk. This is what happened when a screenwriter friend clicked the link in one of my old tweets.
-
If any of your favorite film/tv folk decided to try out Hive instead of Mastodon, now might be a good time to remind them that #SnootBBQ is here for them whenever they're ready to try Mastodon.

As the #SnootBBQ is growing, I think it probably makes sense to set up a Patreon for people to contribute some server funds. Purely on an optional/voluntary basis.
But I do like the idea that there is some sort of "reward" for people who contribute to the cost of running this place. Do any of you have suggestions for what that might be?

Hello Mastodon (and #SnootBBQ)! Happy to be here—and excited about the times ahead. I'll be sharing updates about my work as a composer for film, TV, albums, video games and theme parks rides and shows here. You'll also find posts about the entertainment industry at large, with a focus on music and projects that inspire me to get up in the morning and keep doing what I do!

I think I was on one of the last boats that made it onto the shores of #SnootBBQ before the pause. I hope friends from the Twitterverse, esp the #Hollywood #film friends, are patient. In many ways Mastodon is not like Twitter, and that's why we're here. If you/we can afford it, I think we should #donate to help Mastodon manage the influx of new people. https://bbq.snoot.com/@keith/109365981358590892

A quick #SnootBBQ update…
1) New signups and invites are paused.
2) Server has been rebooted and resources upgraded.
3) Things seem to be running smoother now, which is nice.
4) A couple fun new people snuck in before I turned off signups. Please welcome @MarkFrost and @benmekler -
As I'm sure our local users have noticed, the #SnootBBQ instance has been feeling a little sluggish since the huge influx of people last night.
I'm going to be pausing onboarding new members for the day to see if I need to upgrade the capacity, or rethink how we're onboarding new users. I'm also disabling all invites while we get through these mild growing pains.
-
Looks like we are up to 850 active users on #SnootBBQ. Just a reminder that I will be shutting down open signups when we hit 1000. Tough to build community norms when we grow too fast. Thank you all for making this place so welcoming!

A few people have been asking about when #SnootBBQ will update to the new v4 of Mastodon. It happened already while none of us were looking, thanks to the wizards at @mastohost
If you want to dive into the list of changes, you can read more here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.0.0

I just noticed that @WarrenLeightTV has shown up on Mastodon on the #SnootBBQ. I can confirm it's actually him.
I'm sure he'll post his own #introduction post at some point, but Warren is a Tony Award winning #playwright and the #writer and showrunner of #InTreatment and #SpecialVictimsUnit.

A lot of new people joining the #SnootBBQ community! Some suggestions for a good Mastodon experience:
- Use hashtags! Mastodon doesn't have full-text search (you can read up on this, but it's intentional because so many people on social media use full-text search to find people to TARGET). Hashtags are opt-in, and people use them because they WANT to be found. Mastodon makes that easy; so use them!
- You can try this out by posting some info about yourself including the #introduction hashtag.
-
I've been sharing posts here and there about the existing culture and community on Mastodon and the Fediverse, because I think it's important.
There is a large influx of new users right now, including all of us on the #SnootBBQ server, and I think it's important that we remember we are coming into a community that already exists. Let's take some time to figure out the norms before we steamroll over everything with bad habits we picked up from corporate social media.
-
ok lol, the server upgrade apparently happened while I was writing these posts. The future is fast!
For now, I'll be keeping the #SnootBBQ public invites open until we hit 1000 users. Depending on the shape of the community then, I'll decide if it makes more sense to keep public invites open longer or switch to requiring an invitation.
-
I was planning on sending a #SnootBBQ update when we hit 500 users, but I somehow missed that threshold as we're now sitting at 521 people in our film/tv loving community!
At some point this week, I will be shutting down the public signup option, and future users will have to be invited by current users to slow the influx as we balance community growth with community health. I hope you're all having fun on the fediverse!

For now, I'm the sole admin of the #SnootBBQ community, so it's me curating that explore tab. I'm choosing to focus mostly on #introduction posts from people in our community, to help people find each other. I'm trying to avoid the "trends" being dominated by talk about twitter and elon.
But yeah, a lot of words to basically say: our local trends are curated by me with a point of view to growing community and conversation.
