Something like that was a gag in an old #Snarfquest, IIRC. The wizard had crosshairs on his wand.

The artist responsible for the box art here fuelled my imagination though my early teens. Larry Elmore created many of the images in the #DungeonsAndDragons materials on which we based our fantasy role-playing games. He also created a comic strip for Dragon magazine called Snarf Quest. Have you heard of it?
