Семейство System/4 Pi, впервые представленное примерно в 1967 году, было линейкой компактных мощных компьютеров, предназначенных для задач в сфере авионики. Военные использовали эти компьютеры везде, от истребителя F-4 и бомбардировщика B-52 до сонарных систем подводных лодок и противокорабельных ракет «Гарпун». Другие компьютеры семейства System/4 Pi играли более мирную роль в разработке GPS и дистанционного управления полётами. В космосе компьютеры System/4 Pi управляли первой американской космической станцией Скайлэб, а также многоразовой лабораторией Спейслэб, выводившейся в космос шаттлом. Electronic System is a project of the Belgian synthesizer legend Dan Lacksman.
He has performed under his own name, and in groups (most notably Telex). He was an early adopter of synth music, to the point where the first synthesizer he bought, just 3 years before the release of this song, was the first one in Belgium!
“Skylab” is a 14 minute long voyage through time and space. It’s definitely more of a lazy pleasure cruise than a hyperspace rush; you get plenty of time to appreciate the scenery.
And what scenery! The basis of the track is a sort of slow, jazzy strut, with a smooth bass part and a relaxed drum section. The dreamy electric piano lays down the primary texture for the song, which is embellished by confident Moog noodling.
The track was released in 1974 on the album Tchip.Tchip (Vol. 3), although a different version was released first in 1973 on a different version of the album called Electronic System 3, which is credited to “Dan Lacksman With Moog Synthesizer”.

Melbourne to Perth. 3.5 days. One trailer. Endless servo coffee.We crossed the Nullarbor, hit the longest straight road in Australia, visited the Skylab crash site, and had a few mild existential crises along the way.
Now the dome lives in WA, ready to do some science. Because… science. Obviously.

A nifty surprise in a flat of various papers I won at yesterday’s North Star Auction — Skylab decals!
Back in 1979, Skylab came back to earth around the same time as the Miss Universe Pageant. Intermingled with the swimsuits and formal wear, I remember updates where chunks of the space station had landed.

I found this old set of white ceramic drawer knobs with NASA/astronomy pictures on the front at Goodwill just now. Probably from a kid's dresser I'd guess. No idea what to do with them, but for $2.50 I couldn't pass them up. Judging from the NASA subjects, I'd say they're from the late 70s to early 80s.

Before some internal renovation at the Apollo/Saturn V Center at the #KSC Visitors Complex, the #Apollo 19 or #Skylab rescue #CSM was on display so that it could be walked all the way around, including looking into the #nozzle of the #AJ110 #rocket #engine on the Service Module.
