Sailor Bold

“Don’t listen to them,” the captain warned, a dark look on his face.

He ordered them to cover their ears, and no matter what, never listen to the sirens. The cabin boy was putting in the earplugs when he heard it. The most beautiful voice, calling for him. Promises of treasure and power filled his ears.

Would it not be wonderful to be a king?

All he had to do was swim.

So, he did. He didn’t hear the crew calling for him as he swam to the woman on the rock. He never saw her talons coming.

The Last Laugh

Out of breath, her lungs burning, she was determined to escape. After everything she did, she had to live. She ignored the mad laughter and cries chasing her, the blood on her hands. The door! She lunged for the doorknob, fear choking her. Joy bloomed as it opened. She rushed through… and froze. She was right back where she started.

She collapsed, stunned. Tears fell, and an inhuman sound bubbled out. Laughter, high-pitched and strained. There was no way out. It was all for nothing. Laughing, broken at what she had done, she never felt the knife in her neck.

Mirror

Something was wrong with his reflection. It was slow to move, its expressions didn’t match his, and it’s smile was unsettling. He convinced himself he was just seeing things, but as time went on, it distorted further. He glared at his mirror. It smiled back, ghoulishly, and reached out. He recoiled, but it grabbed him by the face, pulling him forward. He struggled in vain. It pulled one more time, and he was overtaken by a feeling of being squeezed. When he opened his eyes, he was in the mirror. And his reflection was out, ghastly smile still taunting him.

Out of Ink

She underlined another misspelled word in the manuscript, writing the correct spelling above it. He didn’t even try to edit, she noted. She’d sat him down and explained the costs of editing. He was smug until she started tearing it apart on the first page, full of mistakes.

Her pen ran out of ink again. Sighing, she rolled over to the terrified, tied-up writer. Plugging her pen into the tube draining his blood, she waited impatiently. She was only on the tenth page with two hundred or so pages left to go. Hopefully, he didn’t run out of ink first.

The Elegant Ones

“Dad! Dad, they came back!”

Michael sighed, paused the TV, and slowly, reluctantly, rose from his armchair. He’d hoped the little beasts had learned their lesson after last time, but apparently not.

“How many?” he called. Aidan didn’t reply. It was answer enough. He resolved to grab the blower again. The little bastards were too small and fast for his rifle, and he didn’t want to get fined for harming them. The blower would just stun them, and then he’d use the broom to shoo them off. Hefting up the lawn blower, he opened the back door to find his son on top of the trash can, compies below jumping in a vain attempt to bite at him.

“Help,” Aidan said sheepishly, recoiling from a particularly alarming high jump. Michael sighed again. He wouldn’t have enough time to go for the broom.

The risky way it is, then.

“Alright, just hang on a minute. It’s about to get loud.”

The compies ceased their assault on the trash can, now focused on him. It was a standoff, he with his leaf blower, them surrounding the trash can.

Nobody moved, the compies watching him like a hawk.

He twitched, and a compy shrieked.

Within seconds, he had the blower up and roaring, the nearest compy practically flying from the force. The little group was in shambles, some running off from the sound, others being blown away by being in point-blank range of the blower, and the few standing their ground. His son took the opportunity to jump for the porch, rolling then springing to his feet. Within seconds, he was safe inside the house.

Michael slowly backed up, keeping the dinos at bay. He reached behind himself, blindly, for the door. Feeling the knob, he slipped inside through the open, cracked door. He turned off the blower, sighing, as his son locked the door.

“I was trying to get back inside, but they cut me off-” Aidan started, then stopped when Michael held up his hand.

“It happens,” he said, listening carefully for any outside sound. He couldn’t hear anything outside, so he assumed they’d left. “Just keep a better eye out, alright?”

Aidan nodded and opened his mouth.

THUD.

They both froze.

They couldn’t have returned already, could they?

Michael went over to a window facing the backyard and opened the blinds. The trash can was knocked over, trash spilling out. It was also being swarmed by the compies, having returned from their strategic retreat.

While the compies rummaged in his trash, one stood on the trash can itself. One of the ones that stood their ground, he noted. He made eye contact. If Michael didn’t know better, he’d think it looked smug.

He narrowed his eyes. This was the most egregious sign of aggression from the little bastards since they’d started harassing him.

“Elegant ones, my eye,” he grumbled.

He’d get back at them… Another day. It was late as it was.

But he swore they wouldn’t get the last laugh.
