This picture was my random pluck from London's National Gallery. I was particularly struck by the colours of the clothing.

Alumni of well regarded US institutes of higher education have told me that they find such religious subjects make it difficult for them to appreciate pictures like this.

I, an atheist, regard this as closed mindedness. How common are such attitudes?
