Hiking eye-to-eye with the passenger jets
Spirit Airlines jet approaching Reno from Rattlesnake Mountain with the snowy Sierras in the background.It’s not often you have a chance from ground level to get eye-to-eye with a passenger jet let alone be above it while it’s still airborne. Well, if you are in the Reno area, be sure to hike 5,014 foot Rattlesnake Mountain, as you will get a close-up view of them as they are descending to land at Reno/Tahoe International Airport. FYI – This does depend on the wind direction.
With the Sierras as a backdrop, it’s 360 degrees of amazing views from Rattlesnake Mountain. Out and back, the trail is approximately 1.7 miles in length and you gain approximately 415 feet in elevation.

View from Rattlesnake Mountain.There are several approaches to the summit of Rattlesnake Mountain to choose from with varying degrees of steepness. Once near the summit, you are afforded splendid views of greater Reno, including a full-on vista of the airport, as well as a great view of downtown.
Rattlesnake Mountain and the adjacent hills in the Huffaker Hills Open Space form the east side of a narrow air corridor, along with the Sierras on the west side, that aircraft fly through on approach to Reno/Tahoe International Airport from the south.

Had a wonderful, exhausting, and exhilarating four day solo backpacking trip through the Hoover, upper Yosemite, and Emigrant Wildernesses. So quiet at times you could hear birds flap their wings from 200 yards away. Crossing over Big Sam (elev. 10,825’) with 50mph+ cross winds yesterday morning was a joy I’ll never forget. Even caught a glimpse of the northern lights on Thursday night. #hiking #backpacking #wilderness #sierras

Not to change the subject or anything…
But I did a crazy last minute drive to try to catch some lightning bolts at Mono Lake. Lots of big cells over the Sierras, then finally this afternoon a big fat one moved across the center of the lake. Perfect position! But it didn't drop a single bolt until it got to the far side and partway across the ridge. I caught a few of those bolts, but I doubt they will be anything very special. -

It just makes me question the depleting intelligence of Americans that they can have massive #NOAA and #NWS warnings of horrible driving conditions on I80 in the #Sierras east of Sacto, and so many entitled drivers drive up there anyway, many who have to eventually be rescued. Just to go lose money in the slot machines or ski. “Whiteout conditions” means you should scrub your trip. Pilots know this, but the masses from suburbia apparently do not.
