  1. You are the building manager in an infinitely long underground shopping mall. All the store fronts are taken. You receive an offer that you cannot refuse, asking you to make room for one more store. How do you do it?

  6. Kirigaoka Central Shopping Street

This shopping street, up and running since the early 1950s, is like a Shōwa-era time capsule. It is located west of JR Akabane Station in Tokyo’s Kita Ward, inside an old Danchi (housing complex) operated by the Tokyo metropolitan government. Just a few of the shops still open regularly, and soon it might disappear for good.

  8. “Stalking Light in Jūjō”

Five years ago in January, I encountered this fine afternoon light while walking around in the Jūjō area of Tokyo’s Kita Ward. Jūjō is a working class district, located about 10 minutes north of Ikebukuro by train. Photos shown in chronological order of taking.

  9. Kirigaoka Central Shopping Street (Part 2)

Second and final part of photos from this retro Shōwa-era shopping street, located west of JR Akabane Station in Tokyo’s Kita Ward inside an old Danchi (housing complex) operated by the Tokyo metropolitan government. Just a few of the shops still open regularly, but it is a unique and interesting area to explore and take pictures.

  11. Leading to Shimizu Inari, the shrine from my previous post, is Inari Dōri Shopping Street (イナリ通り商店街), an old-style neighborhood lane in the Miyamoto-chō area of Itabashi. Sadly, each time I go there, it seems that one more shop has closed down (or been replaced by a generic residential building) - but a little bit of the vintage atmosphere still remains.
