We're getting closer to the end. Here, I've added more detail on the ship. The masts, the superstructure itself railings etc. all complete the look of this old cargo ship.
Then, I've also started working on the foreground: the dock, the cargo crate being lowered down.

In this session, I went back to the clouds in the background, while adding more details on the buildings around the docks. Shadows, support posts etc. may seem insignificant but they add a lot to the overall painting, I think.

Of course, a harbor needs buildings, whether it's Customs, warehouses etc. Here, I've added some buildings on the docks near the ship itself.

With the background done, it is time for the cargo ship itself. A rusty old clunker, my goal with the ship is to give it a sense of age, a ship tired from its many journeys across the oceans.
I've also started adding the water between the ship and the foreground dock, although there's more to do on that front coming up.

The textures of the mountains came next. Depending on how high a mountain is (and depending on location) you will often find trees growing to a certain point. That's part of what I wanted to accomplish in this session: add some sense of foliage on the slopes of the mountains.

In this second progress photo, you'll see that I've added the blue sky and started filling in the mountains, leaving the clouds for a little later. I've found that quite often, I tend to work from the furthest away in my painting, finishing what's closest to me last. Not always true, of course...

Today, I'd like to take you through the journey of one of my latest paintings. It's a harbor scene with mountains in the background and a cargo container being unloaded in the foreground. This is a great example of how I being many of my paintings. A pencil outline, sometimes freehanded, other times traced with carbon paper.
