  1. I’m switching to shaving soap and am looking for a ceramic shaving mug. I’d like get something more interesting than I could find at big market capturing shopping site(s). Any suggestions on a potter or maker/crafter site I could find something? I thought I had a couple sites bookmarked but now can’t find URLs.

  2. If you shave with a safety razor, how many times do you reuse the blades before discarding / recycling them?

  3. One of the things about getting old, that was never mentioned when I was younger, is having to shave ear hair.

It is almost becoming a daily activity, that I didn't expect.

  4. To my #european #shaving bubble: what is a good source of razor blades? I use a Henson razor, so any regular nice quality blade will do.

  5. As I’ve gotten older my face has become less tolerant to multi blade cartridges. I’m going to try the Parker Single Edge razor to see if that fits with me. I’ve used hundreds of double edge SE razors and not found a fit, even the 1959 Gillette Fatboy didn’t work for me. #shaving

  6. PSA: Fuck #wilkinson #shavingsoap !! My face feels like someone used it as pincushion! Never had such a bad shave in my life. Not even when I first started out with cartridge #razors and foam from a can. I'm using a #safetyrazor and I'd say my technique isn't half bad. That soap is killing my face. But I guess that's what you get when you buy from a brand that would rather sell you their expensive canned #shaving gell.

  7. Well, after 8 years of service my trusty Edwin Jagger DE89 #SafetyRazor finally kicked it (threads in the handle stripped). Picked up a RazoRock Game Changer .68-P with the bulldog handle and first impressions, it's a great replacement (paired with Astra Platinums)! Similar mild-ish shave, good weight, great grip, solid stainless steel that should last longer than chrome plate, great price ($80 vs $50 for the DE89), and made in #Canada too! #shaving #razors #buyitforlife

  8. Please excuse me, while I smear otter on my face. #Shaving supplies arrived.

  9. If #Apple ever gets into the electric razor market… well, somebody got there first in design terms, with the MOST Apple-looking devices I think I’ve ever seen (that weren’t designed in Cupertino) : The Laifen P3 Pro and T1 Pro Electric Razors

  10. There's a shave soap I've been using for decades. I bought a case of 12 pucks back in 2020 and just finished my last one. Time to order another case. Except, turns out they discontinued it back in 2022. It's a trivial thing but I'm really going to miss it.

  11. Got up and it was grey and rather damp, had breakfast and then the sun got out. The mutt and me went out enjoyed a short slow run, I clearly eat too much yesterday, burp, as we got home it started to rain again, so good timing. Though, I'm now sitting at my desk with a half trimmed beard and head, because the "sheep shearers" broke mid shave and therefore didn't have time to finish the job and have a shower before work.

Any recommendations for a beard and hair trimmer, I tend to let it grow for a bit, then shave head and give beard a number 2.

  12. CW: Recommendations, grooming appliances

Hello people who shave their face
Do you have an electric shaving thingy for your face
    Is it good?
    Would you recommend it?

I have never shaved my face so I have no idea what's good beyond those weird meat grinder-looking shiny chrome tech ads from the 90s

    Thanks 👍

  13. After a lot of years, I decided to go back to the #shaving #soap and #brush. I hope this is more environmentally friendly than using shaving foam cans...
  14. I've started shaving with a safety razor again after a long hiatus, and it's going relatively well.

But I'm still using an electric beard trimmer to shape my mustache. Can anyone recommend barber scissors, or another method for trimming my beard without electricity? I'd prefer a buy it for life option that could theoretically be an heirloom for my child, if I sharpen it etc.

  19. 🧵 Actual shaving may be less likely to cut than clippers in tricky areas, but you will get that rough feeling- it diminishes in a short time and you get used to to it to some extent. I generally prefer clipping to shaving in most areas (esp any area with friction!) for this reason.

  22. The Youth should know there are WAY CHEAPER, and better, alternatives to expensive Gillette razor blades

In hindsight now, I wish my father would have told me about safety razor shaving with universal standard double edge razor blades, when I started to shave!

I was probably taken in by all the Gillette advertising, and of course, I'd never experienced any other option, so I ended up just using those twin-blade cartridges many years ago. I often had to endure the odd ingrown hair or two for months on end (more about this further on).

To start with, cost, which you'd really have thought would have put Gillette's multi-blade razors out of business long ago (but not, largely because many people do NOT KNOW about suitable alternatives. Just do a search online for Astra Superior Platinum DE blades. They are not half the cost, nor a quarter of the cost cheaper... they're on average about 400% cheaper. This is why after buying a good safety razor that lasts longer than a single lifetime, it ends up paying for itself after a year just through using DE razor blades. There is no vendor lock-in so you are free to try any DE blades as each has different characteristics.

So how do they shave? Well pretty similar to cartridge razors, as safety razors are not cut-throat / straight razors where any slip could be a disaster (hence the name safety razors). What they do not do, because of the single blade, is to lift the hair out from below the skin and cut it. They instead cut the hair level with the skin. This actually helps prevent ingrown hairs for many. I discovered this merely week or so after migrating to safety razors. Many say this level of cutting is easier on the skin, as there is also only one blade being used.

Another difference, although not needed, is using proper shaving soap that is lathered up using a brush. Apart from the glide it provides, most soaps are made from natural products that may include coconut oil, lamb fat, etc and actually help condition the skin (many also being vegan products including the brushes). The brushing also helps stimulate the hairs before shaving. Soaps and creams come with some amazing fragrances, but many are also fragrance-free.

Traditional shaving is also more environment friendly: Apart from natural soaps, these do not use aerosol cans at all either. Unlike cartridge razor blades made from mixed plastics and metals that can't easily be separated, DE blades are pure metal. I store my used blades in a money tin and these can be sent for recycling once the tin is full (after about 5 years my tin is not even a quarter full).

So where does one start then? I'd recommend starting with a reasonably good razor, something like a Merkur 34C or an Edwin Jagger DE89. For blades, I've settled on the Astra's, but I'd highly recommend getting a DE sample pack to try out different blades to find something that matches your razor, skin, and beard type. Starting out with  a very cheap razor and blades is often not going to be a good experience.

I have tons more tips and advice on my webpage at the link below. I just wish more people knew about the benefits and alternatives of traditional wet shaving, but unfortunately the Big Pharma and similar companies prefer the exceptional profits of selling Gillette type blades.

  24. I’m a nerd. I am an extra nerdy nerd when it comes to shaving. My father never used shaving cream from a can or a bottle. He used a brush with shaving soap in a mug. Old school… is that the proper term? I started out with an electric razor but lost it somewhere and had to borrow his mug/soap/brush kit once and ever since then I have been a mug/soap/brush user too. Maybe the best way to describe it is a mug/soap/brush snob. Yeah, that works.

Years ago… I can’t remember when… 2008? 2010? Jen and I were on a weekend getaway in Manhattan and we stumbled across this super fancy, high end, shaving supply store. We went in because Jen wanted to feed my shaving snobbery because she loves me. We left with this super fancy brush and a super fancy razor handle and a groovy stand that held them both. The razor handle just used Gillette Mach 3 blades, which I was using at the time anyway. The last time I changed the blade the connection piece of the handle broke. I managed to piece it back together but I couldn’t take the blade off anymore. Today I needed a shave… badly… and I also needed a new blade. I tried to figure out how to get the blade off so I could change it, but as I feared the whole thing is broken in such a way that I cannot fix it anymore.

I’ve been a shaving snob with this snooty razor for all of these years. 10 years? 12 years? Something like that. I just ordered a less fancy, less snobby, but still kinda snobby new Mach 3 razor handle online. I am sad. Like… why am I sad? Because I am a snob, and also because Jen and I bought that razor together on a really great weekend trip to New York and that made it extra special.

The new razor is going to be fine. I think it will fit on my snooty, snobby razor and brush stand. It’ll be fine. It won’t, however, be the same. I am a sad snooty snob.
