It's that time of the month again: the bitter end.
I've missed a couple of these this year, but here's my supposedly monthly Link Aggregation post, where I try and share the things I've stumbled upon since the last time I did one, so that more people can find more good things on the internet.
Think of it as a sort of monthly curated box of links.

Wikipedia at 25 grapples with new challenges arising from generative AIWikipedia celebrated its 25th birthday this month. Given the centrality of Wikipedia to so much activity online, it is hard to remember (or to imagine, for those who are younger) a time without Wikipedia. The latest statistics are impressive:
Wikipedia is viewed nearly 15 billion times every month.
Wikipedia contains over 65 million articles across more than 300 languages.

@molly0xfff He does understand that by taking Wikipedia text under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence he's required to make all future versions of his text available under the same licence, right? Right?

I learned today that because of the strong Moral Rights protection in the #Philippines , it is not possible for Authors/Creators (defined as "natural persons" by law) to dedicate/release their work to the #PublicDomain .
And even if we use 0BSD, MIT-0, CC0, and other similar public-domain-equivalent licenses, we can still sue anyone who:
1. Misused our name
2. Misrepresented us
3. Misused our work (downstream)All under Moral Rights because we can never waived it under Philippine law. Even with a promise not to sue anyone is not a guarantee.
So, saying, "This work is under 0BSD/MIT-0/CC0 and I will never sue anyone for whatever reason", won't work under Philippine law. The Creator/Author will always have their Moral Rights as the creator/author of the work. It's completely up to you to trust that they will fulfill their promise. 🤪

I am producing and directing an animated series called "Lunatics!" about the first permanent settlers on the Moon, which attempts to be as realistic about this as possible, drawing on present-day technology, and much of the organizational culture around it.
It's a *free-culture* project: CC By-SA 4.0 licensed for episodes and most behind-the-scenes content. And an open movie project in that source files from Blender, Kdenlive, etc will be released with episodes. For this to be truly meaningful, we also rely on *free/open-source* software to produce it.
There is a #Pixelfed for the project itself:
@[email protected]
and of course, a website for the series:
https://lunatics.tv
and the project:
https://lunaticsproject.org
This is my "professional" account, so I focus on topics related to my project: #Animation #Film #ScienceFiction #FreeSoftware #OpenSource #Copyright #Copyleft #Art #Blender #Kdenlive #CreativeCommons #FreeCulture #ShareAlike
I often post little progress reports and work-in-progress here.
I try to avoid partisan politics and other acrimonious subjects. Also trying to watch my language here, keeping it PG-13, let's say.
If you would like a less filtered :monkey_see_no_evil: version of me, I do have a personal #Hometown (basically #Mastodon but not quite) account as well:
@[email protected]
NOTE: #Misskey allows a longer post length and also up to 16 images per post, which makes it a lot more convenient for my project posts. Buy you'll only see the first 4 images on Mastodon (there are 7 on this post, for example). There are subtle differences like this between #Fediverse platforms!

@aral I like that you stipulated "share-alike" rather than open source, I think this highlights an important distinction between copyleft licences and permissive licences like BSD and MIT, that, as you put it, "if you benefit from technology that has been put into the commons, you must share back"

> Now OpenAI has made a world where rules and licenses don't apply to any company with a valuation over $N billion dollars. This happens even in the face of *explicitly* setting license conditions to prevent exploitation.
#StackOverflow owners decided to hand all the freely-given community contributions there, over to #OpenAI, against the long and loud protests of that community. And, IMO, in violation of the #CreativeCommons #Attribution #ShareAlike license on all those contributions.
Apparently, with enough money on offer, #copyright violation doesn't matter.

Q: If a literary work is in the #PublicDomain or is licensed under an #Attribution and/or #ShareAlike license (like #CCBy and #CCBySA), is it still #Fanfiction?
A: No.
Explanation:
You see, in the strictest sense, a fanfiction is an unlicensed/unauthorised derivative of a Copyrighted work.
Since the Public Domain, and the Attribution and ShareAlike licenses (provided you follow the license terms), allow for anyone to create a derivative work, then any and all works based on it are not fan fiction.

I've been reading up on software licensing and discovered that #GPL virality is ineffective in the European Union: https://joinup.ec.europa.eu/collection/eupl/news/why-viral-licensing-ghost
This was a surprise, and therefore is by itself a good reason to use #EUPL for software in Europe. It is #copyleft (a.k.a. #sharealike) so your application or library is protected; but it isn't viral so people linking with your code -- even statically -- are free to use it commercially. Data is covered, too.

If Luna is like Earth, with atmosphere, trees, animals, water, and everything that will support life, how do you think life in Earth-Luna will be?
1. Will Lunans reach Earth first, or will Earthlings reach Luna first?
2. Is Earth going to be united and wage war on Luna? Or, a Lunan Empire trying to conquer Earth, will force Earth to unite?
3. Is there going to be cultural exchanges and trades between Earth and Luna?
4. What if Luna is superior in knowledge and technology than Earth? Are Earthlings going to accept Lunans are superior?
5. Will humanity (assuming Lunans are humans too) have colonised Mars already with their combined knowledge and technologies?
What do you think?
Oh. Before you answer, let's make this entire thread under a #CreativeCommons #Attribution #ShareAlike 4.0 (#CCBySA #CC #BySA) #License. So, if someone wants to write a story based on the answers here (if there will be any), it's shareable and attribution is given. ^_^

Or, maybe you have book recommendations about such a setup like above?

Last week, I got a visual prototype together of how a drumming robot should wield a stick. FROM THE WRIST! #BatmanMeme Most drumbots just pull the stick down to "deadhit" the skin. There's a lot of work to do on that part of this project, but meanwhile, there's also some basic electronics to prove the concept.
A drumbot needs a motor to flick the stick, then pull the stick quickly, but gently, back to rest and hold it there. It also needs to read MIDI note velocity and map that to the motor's useful powerband. Finally, the motor has to quickly and quietly restore the stick to its ready position.
All this requires complex motor control, Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to be exact, and a microcontroller to read the MIDI Note-On data and have each part of drumbot respond appropriately.
Circuitry and basic code are proven. I'll probably end up blowing up 4, VERY expensive MOSFETs in my first attempt, but hey, we're on this earth to make mistakes, and thereby make the future. This is not a cheap project, either, and is third in my project queue, so it will take some time.

CW: On: Content License
When the #Fediverse started in 2008, the main concern was the #License of people's content. Many instances from 2008 to 2015 (afair) prominently displayed, and included in their Terms of Service, the license of the content of users who use their service.
By 2016 (afair), this practice started to disappear. You wouldn't even find information about the #Copyright of the content of users in many instances. Without any mention, the default, according to Copyright Laws all over the world, is #AllRightsReserved.
(Again, the ‘end’ date is only as far as I remember, it could be earlier when this practice stopped.)
That said, I included in my profile description that my SNS posts are under the #CreativeCommons #Attribution #ShareAlike 4.0 International License, or #CCBySA / #BySA for short.
It doesn't cover reshare/reboosts/quotereplies, nor the content of the linked article, if any. Replies to my thread are not affected either. It only covers the actual SNS posts of mine, unless otherwise specified.
Do you have to do it too? Not really. It is just my personal choice. Responsible #writers will still ask for permission if they're going to quote you in their article.

@youronlyone Ok, I think I found what I'm looking for: #CCPlus. A particular CC license with additional permissions granted, or agreement, on top of.
I want a license:
1. that is #ShareAlike / #Copyleft
2. but without the Attribution requirement
3. and without the State Changes requirement
4. and is applicable to every derivativeUnder CCPlus:
1. License the work under #CCBYSA first
2. Then state the additional permissions, like #NoAttribution and #NoStateChangesHowever, I don't think #4 is posssible? I think it is contradictory, since the license is CC-BY-SA and the “Plus” is not, it's only a waiver of additional rights. But, then again, it is also a separate agreement, so, shouldn't it be possible if #4 is stated?
See: https://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/CCPlus
n.b. This is for non-software, or #literature, works. There are situations where I personally don't think an attribution is needed, and stating changes is too much. But, it is beneficial for the community that any derivative are under the same #license.
In any case, in software, a close equivalent is #MIT0 (no attribution) and #MPL2 (no state changes).

Quick question to those who are knowledgeable about #licenses.
Is there a #ShareAlike type of #license without the #Attribution requirement? I understand I can waive it for any licenses, however, I want it to be the case downstream.
Basically, it's #CCBYSA 4.0 but without Attribution requirement. Hmm… thrown in, without stating the changes.
Re: stating the changes… I don't know, I think it's not a good thing to state changes for #literature type of works, most especially in #fiction.
Or, to put it another way, it's like #PublicDomain but with a ShareAlike requirement.
-
Feel free to continue the story as long as it is licensed under #CreativeCommons #Attribution #ShareAlike 4.0 International License.
This space is yours. Write to your heart's content. Make it longer, exciting, boring, or end it immediately. Turn it into horror, romance, comedy, or introduce elves or vulcans. You can do it all.

I have just find #BlendSwap repository of #Blender files licensed under #CreativeCommons #Attribution, #ShareAlike, #CC0 as well as some NonComercial.

After two weeks of being ill and busy (or lazy for short :D ), I'm back on track with #darebee #workout program
Pick a #fitness program yourself:
https://darebee.com/pick-a-program.htmlThey don't make it easy to find, but actually all their workouts are under #by-nc-nd (yes like the most restrictive #creativecommons licence but if people would group up and offer them some generous donation if they relicense it into #sharealike, who knows, they might consider it)
