Well this one was way out of sequence for me, but I watched "The Man in the White Suit" (1951) yesterday.
This is only marginally SF. It's really a satire about planned obsolescence. A man invents a "perfect" fabric that won't wear out or even need to be cleaned.
But instead of embracing this technological leap forward, the industry hounds him to kill the product before it devalues their enterprises and jobs.
The fabric surely qualifies as an "element of wonder".
