Updates on "Internet Safety" bills:
-Hawley and Durbin are trying to sneak the unconstitutional STOP CSAM Act into the FY27 NDAA. Hawley allegedly managed to get it included it in the manager's amendment. This means it has a higher chance than previous attempts at being successful.
-Still, there's procedural roadblocks that the bill has to clear to survive until the final passage. The manager's amendment is reserved for uncontroversial amendments.
-The Senate Commerce Committee has scheduled a markup for KOSA and the SCREEN Act for Wednesday, August 5th. There are other bills, but they're far less problematic than KOSA and the SCREEN Act.
-Senate KOSA's fate in the House is still quite uncertain. The same goes for the KIDS Act's fate in the Senate.
-The SCREEN Act's approval among Democrats is unknown at the moment.Call your Senators and Representatives ASAP!

LegalEagle on Nebula: https://nebula.tv/videos/legaleagle-social-media-just-got-its-big-tobacco-moment
My Summary: The courts have multiple times in multiple districts affirmed that Section 230 is not a liability shield for features like auto-play and infinite scroll and anything developed by the host. IMO, this includes "the algorithm" for recommendations other algorithmic feeds. You might be entitled to monetary relief; there will be class action moving forward.
I couldn't find the YT version of the Nebula video. But, if I do later, I'll put it in the replies. DM me if you'd like a Nebula trial; I only have a few but I'll give out what I have first-come-first-serve.

Apple Defeats Liability for Not Scanning iCloud for CSAM, But the Judge Was Not Pleased-Amy v. Apple | Eric Goldman
#censorship #endToEndEncryption #section230 #surveillanceThe opinion downplays the encryption angle; it mentions encryption only twice, as if it’s an afterthought. However, encryption is the critical attribute underlying Apple’s moves. Forcing Apple to scan for CSAM in iCloud means breaking end-to-end encryption for everyone and all purposes, including: malefactors who would intercept private files for criminal purposes; and government actors who have repeatedly shown that they will break into, distribute, and weaponize privately stored file caches (I was just thinking about the North Korea Sony hack. Remember it?).

To be clear, I wasn't arguing for a repeal of Section 230 and similar laws. They're still suitable for regulating small-to-media online services. Like fediverse hosts, for example. I was just pointing out that trying to apply laws appropriate to small services to mega-platforms is a bound to fail, as it has.

The #internet has got the imperialists running scared of public opinion. This is why they are attacking the internet, e.g. #AgeVerification, removing #Section230, etc. Don't fall for their bullshit, people. The #Epstein class is obviously NOT "protecting" your kids. youtube.com/shorts/r_Lor...

@boelder
This article goes along fine describing things until the very first moment it has to begin to explain things. Then the author is like, "the reason things went wrong is #section230!"It's like reading an article about cheating in bicycle racing and when it's time to say why, the author is like, "it's because humans have skeletons!"
Are you sure about that, champ? Maybe you should write a bit more about how you reached your conclusions?

Section 230 Is Dying By A Thousand Workarounds, And Massachusetts Just Added Another One

Imagine that you go on a corporate #SocialMedia platform, and it displays all the personal info it knows about you and then claims it will blackmail you if you don't visit for multiple hours per day, all while it pushes at you all the stuff most likely to trigger you?
Would that be speech covered by #Section230?
All their design choices can't be exempted.
