Very poor reporting. There is a formal process to appeal against the decision, not by writing to the council or an MP but requesting an appeal. This is time dependent so the BBC should have emphasised that instead of a throwaway line.
"He said the family had the right to appeal, and would now have to go on the waiting list for an alternative school place."Yes the pupil is automatically put on the waiting list but the appeal process can overturn the decision! The formal appeal via the council should be the first thing to do.
