I have to say: though mid-70s luchador movies with other stars are made in a more dynamic, less boxy way, demonstrating — to my eyes — the influence of Italian movies, they are missing the special #Santo charm. In terms of acting and line delivery, there is nothing to separate one luchador from another. But at the risk of getting metaphysical, there’s something about Santo’s shape and the way he runs and the way he holds himself. He’s a unique screen presence.

I'm pretty bummed that #Indicator didn't follow up on its #luchador film releases with more. I really expected them to release at least a few more #Santo films. Did they plan to?

This one featured a guest sidekick, José "Mantequilla" Nápoles, who was very endearing. He did something that Santo never deigns to do: try to emote. His only screen appearance.

Santo Stefano, il santo coerente che oggi nessuno segue più.
Lasciate da parte l'aureola e il calendario liturgico per un attimo. Apprezziamo laicamente l'uomo che non si è venduto.
Stefano ha avuto il coraggio di dire ciò che pensava davanti ai potenti. Poteva ritrattare, poteva mediare, poteva usare il "politichese". Invece è rimasto lì a prendersi le pietre in faccia pur di non tradire la sua idea.

I can’t believe how much ink I’ve spilled (digitally) making notes about #Santo movies on Letterboxd. This week, I managed to find another three films that I hadn’t seen, in crappy quality of course. And I’ve been putting off watching the 80s ones, for fear of what’s it’s going to do to my image of Santo in his prime (i.e. prior to 1971). I’ll eventually watch them — for science — but I’m trepidatious to say the least.

I wish I had a better view of the position, but it looks like Blue Demon is much better developed. In fact, I don't see how it's possible for Santo to have so few pieces out. Knowing Santo, he probably gave Blue six free moves.

Vengeance of the Vampire Women. I shouldn't like this one as much as I do but, maybe because of its cheapness, it has this dark, languid dreaminess that I think is very cool. Not why most people watch Santo movies, I know.

This one is unique among #Santo movies for its especially chaotic brawls, both in and out of the ring, with between five and ten wrestlers. Other novelties include grave robbing, expert voice mimicry, a seance, and a graveyard that is used in other lucha films (making it less of a novelty, I guess).

"Niche" doesn't do justice to the obscurity of the things #Indicator has been releasing for the past several months.
