@pkuipersmunneke 🏆 good on ya'. Entertaining and informative thread. Thanks.
I have yet to use the #sailrail Ireland <-> France but @Ciarancuffe had mixed opinions so 🤷

@pkuipersmunneke 🏆 it's a great service if combined with the less known #sailrail offering of the ferry and train combined in one ticket.

Just coming to the end of a trip by bike train and ferry from Limerick to Bordeaux. 36 hours since leaving home I am nearly there. Included in that 1000 +kms of travel is 15 km from Cork Station to Ringaskiddy and 30kms from Roscoff to Morlaix Station. It wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea and it's certainly not cheap but it feels right.... #slowtravel #carboncredits #SailRail #interrail

In #SailRail news, I attempted to fly from London City Airport to Dublin tonight and the plane was struck by lightning mid-air and had to turn round. I am now stranded in London overnight. Would not happen on the Ulysses, let me tell you :)

I have to go to Cheltenham for work next week (from Dublin). Even though it's much closer to Holyhead than London is, #SailRail takes longer to get there than to London. It would be really nice if our friends in the UK invested a bit more in their rail network to make these sorts of journeys possible over land.

OK here we go #SailRail again. Compared to the expensive misery of Dublin Airport, the check-in and boarding process for Irish Ferries is a lot more human scale. In the lounge this time, so hopefully will be able to work a bit (after a short snooze)

Going to London next week #SailRail thanks to the Aer Lingus pilot work-to-rule. I had flights booked and needed to change them but couldn't due to no availability so it's the boat for me. Paid extra for the lounge this time having learned my lesson among the morning drinkers the last time round!

@sinabhfuil this is a tricky one given geography and economics. I have to travel to London for work now and then. Last time I used #SailRail on the way over. It was pleasant enough but it cost a day compared to taking the first flight to LCY, so it’s hard to balance that in a business context. For leisure, I would be in favour of giving people extra days paid leave to cover travel time in exchange for less flying. It’s not simple though - Ireland: remote. climate breakdown: existential threat

OK, we’ll be in Euston in 10 minutes. Not a bad journey, but not gonna lie it’s a lot less convenient than flying - though it’s less stressful. While it’s possible to get some work done on ferry and train, it’s best not to rely on that as the environment can be distracting. May depend on your line of work though (and how easily distracted you are). #SailRail

Had to go through passport control in Wales which is a new one on me - last time I did this they didn’t check. Something to do with Rwanda no doubt. Bit of a wait for the train, next one’s in about 40 mins from when I got here - makes sense as the ferry will be delayed now and then for weather. #SailRail

Should have got the lounge I think, I forgot my headphones and it was a bit boisterous in the public areas. Something for next time! Anyway, just about to dock at Holyhead. #SailRail

For work, I am leading the technology build out for a new reinsurance business - hence the trip to London. The job entails a little bit of coding and A LOT of reading docs and drawing diagrams. Over the years I have got my travelling work kit down to 3 pieces - laptop, remarkable tablet (for note taking and e-reading) and phone. I couldn’t work at a table like this all day, but for a few hours crossing it’s fine. Thinking of getting the club lounge next time, this time it’s basic fare. #SailRail

I am starting to suspect the 7:05 last check-in is not strictly true. I am waiting in a departure lounge and not on the ship, so I think I showed up too early. Could have had an extra few mins in bed! #SailRail

Check-in was super easy and took about 2 minutes. The terminal staff were lovely and friendly and relaxed. Check out the old-skool train ticket! #SailRail

Good news - there are bike racks at port terminal. Bad news - they’re the wheel bender type that are hard to lock to. Cycling through the port is no fun - obvious nobody thought about cycling when the place was laid out. There’s a new greenway being built though, which will really open the place up when it’s finished. #SailRail

Step 1, cycle to port. It’s about 20 mins and last checkin is 7:05 for an 8:05 sailing, so it’s an early start #SailRail

Anyone got any experience of traveling #SailRail from Dublin to Glasgow via Belfast? In particular how do you get from Lanyon station in Belfast ot the ferry port?

Todos en #Españistán sabemos que #Europa comienza en los pirineos, pero también los #trenesnocturnos ?
Me encanta viajar en #tren. Alguna petición para empujar que eso ocurra?

For the #ferry and #sailrail people ... has anyone tried #eurolines to London ?
-
@MartinJBreen the #SailRail option is also great for last minute travel - due to the fixed fares.
I may know of some people who have used it to travel London<>Holyhead not getting the ferry as it was cheaper than a last minute UK train fare!

Bumpy start to trying a trip without flying. Despite "booking" a taxi with @FreeNow_IE got notified at pick up time that the were no drivers available. Cue some emergency strategy change #sailRail

CW: mention of death / funerals
@klillington it has been so long since I have been on a daytime sailing that served food.
Last daytime sailing was when all the flights were cancelled (pandemic related) and I had to get back to work setup.
Normally, my Stena experience is during the night, doing a last minute #sailRail option (unfortunately usually to make it in time for a death / funeral) -
Holyhead are planning to make upgrades to the ferry terminal and train station over coming years and looking for your views.
Dublin-London is the busiest aviation route in Europe and taking ferry+train produces 73% less CO2.
Improving the experience of #SailRail can make it easier to choose the lower emissions choice. https://haveyoursay.tfw.wales/holyhead-station
