Had a (mostly) successful test of the cable repaired on the Dragonfly 1200 swing wing system.
Unfortunately some damage was discovered too...
-
After attempting to assemble the new swing wing cable, it turns out to be 3.5" - 4" too short 🤦♂️🤬

Getting proper rigging made in Nassau is difficult, but I was able to have Harbourside Marine make up a temporary solution with 5/16" cable with Nicopressed brass sleeves and thimbles assembled through the sheave with a shackle to attach to the block in the aka.

Had a quick inspection from a professional diver yesterday. The propeller is fine 🥳🎇
I did find a broken hose clamp on the shaft seal, so I replaced it today. Once the diver finishes the bottom cleaning, we'll test the propeller to see if things really work as expected.

The planned departure from Nassau to Freeport was aborted last Wednesday when the port swing wing cable broke while attempting to unfold my Dragonfly 1200 after refueling.
On the way back to the slip there was a thunk that could be felt through the deck, and forward thrust disappeared. There were no lines in the water, but reverse got us to the dock. Then we realized that the swing wing cable fell between the hulls and wrapped around the propeller! 😱

Why does my sea strainer filter basket have half a cylindrical piece is stone in it? The other one has a similar stone too. It looks deliberate.

Found a mystery spring in engine room bilge, but have no idea where it came from. It has made me very nervous to start the engine.
Helpful suggestions welcome.

Lesson learned: Always make a new name decal for a boat completely cover and blot out whatever remains of the old name, AND any previous names with a solid background color.
Now I know why the previous owner had used such a large white field decal. Even after peeling it off, the remnants of the name before that were still visible.
The decal I added for the new name GEON, Montreal, QC, sits in a faded shadow of the old name and allows the even older name to be seen too. 🤦♂️

who cares where Waldo is? My problem today, is to figure out where the high water alarm sensor is.
When using a Jabsco Self-Priming Electric Drill Pump https://defender.com/en_us/jabsco-self-priming-electric-drill-pump-17250-0003 to pump out the last bit of water in the engine room bilge that the regular bilge pump left, I managed to trip the alarm. Wow is that thing loud. It's still triggered, but I can't figure out what in this mess of components is the actual sensor.
I can see a bilge pump, but not the sensor.

Just standing on my diesel engine.

I'm sure if happens all the time, but it's a first for me to be awakened by the mooring pendant bumping against the hull. It's so calm out there that all the boats in the mooring field are pointed in different directions. I went up on deck and found that the mooring ball is floating between the main hull and the starboard ama, under the net. It's fine, but a little unnerving. 🫤

Looking for some temporary letters for my boat name. Maybe these will work?
The Coast Guard cool with bedazzling right?

An object lesson in how dissimilar metals behave in salt water. The current owner of the boat had this steel rudder downhaul cable repaired with an aluminum nicropress fitting just a few months ago. When we hauled it out for a survey inspection, it had completely dissolved! 😮
The owner had to scramble to find a rigger, who installed the correct zinc-coated brass nicropress fitting (pictured), and had to pay for an extra hour of travel lift time. 🤷♂️

I discovered that my 30 year old foul weather gear no longer keeps the rain out during a torrential downpour while having a potential boat purchase surveyed today 🙁☔⛵.
We kept finding little bits of old curled up tape, and were wondering what duct tape nightmare the surveyor might discover, but it turned out to be old seam sealing tape that was crumbling off my jacket 🤦♂️
So, it was a relief to discover it wasn't some horrible, hidden, problem with the boat.

I was just talking with a sail boat delivery captain and asked about traveling with a deck vest that has a CO2 cartridge.
