Winnicott’s distinction between the true self and the false self
This is the best summary I’ve seen of this distinction from Ruti’s The Summons of Love pg 64:
#MariRuti #Ruti #WinnicottWinnicott explains that our inner agility is threatened whenever we feel assaulted by the outside world—whenever we feel traumatized either by our intimate relationships or by a wounding social context. Predictably enough, our usual response to such situations is to set up psychological barriers to protect ourselves against being violated. Such defensive barriers over time congeal into false self-presentations that make us feel reassuringly self-contained even as they gradually deprive us of our existential elasticity; we feel impermeable, and sometimes even invincible, without necessarily being aware of the ways in which we have relinquished our claim on a full bodied life. As our true self slips into hiding behind the false one, we become more and more unyielding, more and more uncompromising, often alienating the people we most care about. Yet, ironically enough, the ultimate goal of the false self is to safeguard the continued viability of the true self in the face of external challenges. In this paradoxical fashion, the false self, though itself utterly incapable of emotional complexity, sustains our latent capacity for such complexity by ensuring that our true self does not get exploited to the point of total suffocation.

I’m a huge fan of WordPress’s new rewind feature which shows what you were posting about on this day in previous years. It turns out that on 18th June 2025 I was posting about this extract from Bruce Fink’s book on Seminar XI:
By way of contrast, Lacan’s view is that losses are inevitable and irreversible, and they must be mourned. We mustn’t spend our whole lives complaining that we’ve been gypped and trying to get back what we feel we’ve lost out on. Now, once those losses are recognized for what they are and mourned, they can be sublimated or sublated in a sense, transmogrified with the coming to the fore of the phallic signifier, the Phallus with a capital P, symbolized by the matheme Φ. This is a forward-looking, as opposed to a backward-looking project. Rather than regressing to childhood to repair all the “damage” that was done, there is a push toward the recognition that what was, simply was what it was, it had to be that way (there is no point whining “If only things had been different….”); and a push toward the symbolization of something that can move things forward.

I’d forgotten what a starkly beautiful expression that was: “What was, simply was what it was, it had to be that way“. If, as Ruti puts it, the melancholic subject is lost in “the labyrinth of its melancholy investments” Φ signifies the moment of suddenly realising that you’re alone in the labyrinth and walking, falteringly, out of the door and wondering what comes next as your eyes adjust to the sun and your lungs breath in the fresh air.
(I realise the proper Lacanian position would be something more like Φ making the labyrinth navigable, so it’s no longer a prison, but I like the image so much I’m not going to correct it 😊 I also think it captures something phenomenological of these kinds of transitions which structural approaches tend to miss)

Verschiedene Zeiten
Irgendetwas war da los auf dem Bahnhof Rüti. Wir waren nachmittags, nach zwei Uhr, unterwegs und warteten auf unseren Zug, der um 14:24 auf Gleis 3 fahren würde. Die S15 nach Niederweningen auf dem Gleis jedoch, sie war auf 12:21 angekündigt. Was genau? Wieso genau? Und warum stand nichts davon, dass er zwei Stunden verspätet wäre?
Ehrlich gesagt verstehe ich das nicht so ganz. Es konnte sich selbstverständlich um einen Defekt handeln, aber viel wahrscheinlicher war:

Rapperswil im Mai
Am 1. Mai sind im Kanton Zürich die Läden geschlossen: Tag der Arbeit. Links Bewegte gehen für die Rechte der Arbeitnehmer/innen auf die Strasse, Autonome auch – jene einfach häufig zusätzlich mit Farbbeuteln zum Verteilen im Gepäck.
Wir weichen jeweils gerne in andere Kantone aus, wo der 1. Mai ein normaler Arbeitstag ist. So auch dieses Jahr: Wir fuhren mit dem Zug das Tösstal hoch und dann via Rüti wieder runter bis nach Rapperswil. Dort dem See entlang flanierend – mit „tierischer“ Überraschung am Weg – und anschliessend ansteigend zum Schloss. Von der Terrasse beim Schloss aus hat man einen wunderschönen Ausblick über die Stadt, über den Damm, den Zürichsee und die beiden Inseln Ufenau und Lützelau.
Als wir da oben standen, konnten wir zusehen, wie ein Schiff an- und wieder ablegte und dabei viele 1.-Mai-Ausweich-Passagiere aus- und einlud.
Irgendwann möchte ich auch wieder mit dem Schiff von Rapperswil nach Zürich fahren …

In der #Schweiz sind zwei Neonazis zu "bedingten Geldstrafen" verurteilt worden, weil sie am 18. Juni 2022 in #Rüti / #Zürich ein #RechtsRock -Konzert organisiert hatten.
Angekündigt waren damals #Oidoxie und #FieL (Marcel Martens).
Am gleichen Tag und Ort hatte sich übrigens auch die #JungeTat (ja,genau die aus der Recherche von @correctiv_org ) getroffen.
