    Dragging people through all the sights must be tedious. But there has to be some middle ground or way to introduce people to unusual world features in a less irksome manner. After all, there are published settings that are "non-standard", which some folks really love.

    I imagine some players are playing because they know a bit of the setting and have already bought in to the premise.

    My thoughts on the issue are many and varied.

    Your question seems primarily to have two concerns:

    1) Players metagaming and optimizing knowledge and mechanics to “beat” scenarios. The sort of thing that might be referred to as a very “gamist” approach to the situation.

    2) Lost sense of wonder. Which I think relates to narrowing player sense of perspective, types of goals, and how the goals might be achieved.
