"The Pontine Marshes at Sunset," August Kopisch, 1848.
A lurid red sunset dominates this image...the sun setting over the marshes near Rome, where rivers dump into the Tyrrhenian sea. As with other Romantic landscapes, there's all sorts of little details to catch...look for some real-life landmarks, an old water conduit, a medieval ruin, and buffalo.
This canvas was a huge influence on later German Romantics, and is simply gorgeous on its own.

Thomas Chatterton became an accomplished poet & managed to die in literary, opium-fogged poverty all by the age of just 17. While walking with a friend in St Pancras Old Churchyard, he fell into an open grave. His friend, helping him out, joked about assisting in the resurrection of his genius. Shelley's poem Ozymandias was likely influenced by the adventurer, explorer
& archaeologist Giovanni Belzoni bringing part of a broken statue of Ramesses II from Egypt to London. Though only part of the head & part of the torso remained, the statue weighed 7 tons & was moved with tremendous difficulty.
