Looks like as soon after 2 years (a.k.a as soon as legally required warranty is expired) many devices will no longer get software support!
I can imagine similar support for their custom backends, raising the question how long customers can operate the devices.

@peter Yep, we need a #RightToOperate for #IoT!

Taking over a Dead #IoT Company
Very good teardown on the HW/SW and business of the #NYCTrainSign.
I agree with his conclusion: Good Idea, Good Timing, Bad Team, Bad Product (or in my opinion more likely bad Engineering)
Bonus point: He managed to buy the original domain and fake the backend API to hack the sign SW, so you can keep using yours! #RightToOperate

@sambowne Offline use would be one way to create more trust in consumer #iot devices. There are others as well such as E2E, using your own servers, disabling tracking of certain vital signs etc. ideally through HW
Some of those have additional benefits like #RightToOperate if the manufacturers discontinue the product

@gdinwiddie I wonder if we need a #RightToOperate and not only a #RightToRepair for #IoT devices
