  1. Prof #RichardMurphy in his blog takes a look at the #FInancialTimes Editorial and its castigation of the new British PM’s legislative agenda: The Editorial is, of course, nothing but a crass attempt to persuade the public that keeping to the well charted #NeoLIberal economic course is what is required to get get the #UK out of whatever trouble it is in (not that private businesses have anything to do with that of course). As Prof. Murphy writes:

“For the last 45 years we have seen government after government in the UK seek to revive the "animal spirits" in the UK's private sector. Taxes have been cut massively. Grants have been given. Investment partnerships and deals have been signed. Enterprise zones and low and even tax-free zones have been created. Money has been put into infrastructure to help businesses, rather than to build houses for people. And have the animal spirits of business been revived? No, of course not.

Why not? That is because what the UK private sector, whether that be business or banking and finance, is not the slightest bit interested in adding value to the UK economy. In fact, it is so long ago that it did anything of that sort that most of those who think they are engaged in business in the UK have long forgotten what doing so might mean. The only thing they are interested in is extracting value.”

  3. Whatever may be put up in opposition to MMT, it is hard to deny that our current #NeoClassical (#NeoLiberal) #Economy is not working for the better good of society as a whole. It is uncontestable to say that for the last 40 years or so, wealth has been hoovered up and tipped into the pockets of a minute portion of a global population. Where once the western middle class did not feel the theft that was concentrated on Global South, the tables have turned 180 degrees and all strata of society bar the #Billionaires are now awake to this scourge. It is time to think outside the box and come up with more equitable economic systems and toss the current crop into the dustbin of history. Don’t be afraid, it can never be worse than what is in place currently.

“Richard Murphy has written extensively on the subject, developing a position that challenges orthodox interpretations of inflation's causes, questions the tools used to manage it, and argues that the policy response to recent inflationary episodes has been both analytically flawed and socially harmful. His analysis draws on Modern Monetary Theory, heterodox political economy, and close attention to the real-world distribution of economic power.”

  7. "The politics for people that I am promoting would reject the idea of anyone being #disposable. As a result, we could have a caring economy, but it would be more efficient, resilient, and democratic as a consequence, because everyone would be included. And if you use all the resources that everyone can bring to the economy, guess what? You have a bigger, stronger, and better economy where incomes are higher." #RichardMurphy

  8. #RichardMurphy provides an in-depth analysis of in-work #poverty and counters the superficial and anti-social #neoliberal suggestions for solving the issue with genuine solutions. It is a long read, but worth it.

  9. "Above all, it means recognising that #poverty is a political choice. Scotland shows that different outcomes are possible. Until the UK chooses differently, poverty will remain not just widespread, but deeper, more persistent and more destructive with each passing year. We need a politics of care. Right now we have a poverty of care."

  11. #RichardMurphy is beginning to see the light in respect to #UBI #UniversalBasicIncome:

“What impressed me most about this conversation was the pragmatism underlying their radical proposals. They test policies for feasibility, affordability, and popularity. They recognise that introducing UBI in stages makes it familiar and non-threatening. They're willing to work with any party that takes up these ideas.”

  13. A week or so ago I was inspired to write a comment on a blog-post by #RichardMurphy. It is rare for me to be able to write so much in a relatively (for me) short period of time. I have reproduced my comment with a brief introductory explanation of #neoliberalism - the #EconomicSystem that Reform, Tories, Blue Labour and FibDems all support to the detriment of ordinary Brits. The Greens appear to be looking for an alternative #EconomicModel.

  18. If you’re an MMT‘er, this is one podcast you do not want to miss. I for one am looking forward to the next one.

If you are a neoclassical or neoliberal economist then watching this pod cast is likely to screw with your brain, so be warned even though I huighly recommend you watch it.

Our economic systems are built on false assumptions and we need to change that because there are better ways to greater social good.

#People and not #markets should come first.

  22. CW: good piece by Richard Murphy on UK covid denial

"If you listened to the news & our politicians you would think that the word Covid had been banned from use.

"... if Wes Streeting was as serious about healthcare as he claims, he would be talking about this & be demanding that there be data collected on it.

"... if the government as a whole is serious about productivity it should be taking this seriously."

  26. CW: British politics

Richard Murphy's prediction is that the Tories deliberately wreck the economy in an attempt to make the next government's task as difficult as possible.

Paradoxically, deliberately wrecking the economy will, surely, make the Tory losses greater and mean that more Tory MPs lose their seats.

    I am not sure.
