Over the past two days I mainly focused on playing Carmageddon. I occurs to me that as a teen I did not really understand how to play this game properly. Now that I do, I know to appreciate it much better. Especially in context. Its design is multi-layered and the levels are interesting once you start to really explore.

Today in Retromay:
I decided to drive a race in Carmageddon. As a teen I got a censored pirated copy from a family member as a gift. There was an uncensor patch, but I was unable to install it. I was just as happy mowing over robots back then.
A couple years later I got an uncensored version of Carmageddon 2 and I thought that was the sickest game ever.
Playing Cargmageddon 1 for the first time uncesnored... the violence does add a lot. You really notice how transgressive PC games tried to be back then. But the formula of Carmageddon is what makes it fun: you can either win by killing every other driver, ever single human and animal on the map... or by just driving the race. Or a combination of the three.

Gave BlastCorps on the N64 a spin. Fun game but way too stressfull for me. Also having trouble with the controls of that truck you have to drift. Not my cup of tea.

I think I have arrived at the mission where I stopped playing Dungeon Keeper 20 years ago.
Will Retromay help me go further?

Retromay Update:
Dungeon Keeper is becoming more difficult now. But I think I'm dealing way better with it compared to when I was a teenager.
Made a lot of progress in Fire Emblem as well. Doubt I'll finish it this month, but that's fine.

Today I've also started playing Dungeon Keeper. I use KeeperFX since that has some neat quality of life features. I played this a ton back in my teens but never finished it. Love the mood, the art, the humor, the gameplay. I could build dungeons all day!

It has been a bit since I last posted about my RetroMay challenge.
I'm playing Fire Emblem on GBA almost every day. Small sessions of 20 to 30 minutes, so it's unlikely I'll be able to finish it by the end of the month. Still, it's a lot of fun and I consider Fire Emblem one of my main series, so it's great to finally play this.
I enjoy the story quite a lot, which is surprising. I expected it to be a slog in that department, but it holds my interest fairly well. The sprite work is amazing and the animations are so good. The mission design? So much fun!

And that's the end of Diablo: Hellfire. Another milestone in retromay!
It feels good to finally get this off my bucketlist. Wanted to play the addon ever since I was a kid.
Now Dungeon Keeper. Another goldie of my youth that I never finished. Thanks to keeperFX this should be decent to play.

After yesterdays dive into Diablo: Hellfire, which will continue in the next days, I've decided to check out Starfox 64 for the first time.
It has been a rough start for me as I'm still wrestling with the controls. But the storytelling, leveldesign and graphics are all decent fun. I suck at it, but the fact that you progress even if you fail the mission objective is interesting. Same goes for the branching paths.
Will need to play more of it to really find out if it's my thing though.

Retromay update:
Red Alert 2 is still great. It has been a long time since I last played it. Love the FMV-cutscenes, the universe, the storyline and the gameplay. A true classic. And it runs perfectly on Linux.

I fired up the remake of the first Leisure Suit Larry game for my Retromay challenge.
If there's a quick and easy way to cheapen your remake, it's including many Kickstarter Backers as interactable characters right up front.
Ages like milk.

Today on Retromay: As I really don't like the next maps of Rollercoaster Tycoon, I'm putting that game on ice for the moment.
Went ahead and showed my daughter a couple of retro Jump'n Runs from my GOG library.
Pandemonium, which is really cool, Jazz Jackrabbit 2, which is also great.
But I was not prepared for the lifechanging event that was pressing play on the original GEX
Holy shit, that game.
