Ransomware incident with long-tail exposure risk.
The University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center confirmed that up to 1.2M individuals may have been impacted after threat actors encrypted and likely exfiltrated epidemiology research data.
Exposure reportedly included:
• SSNs, driver’s license numbers
• Historic voter registration datasets
• Multi-decade cohort research files
• Subset research servers (non-clinical operations)Notably:
- Decryption tool obtained via third-party cybersecurity firm
- Law enforcement engagement
- Systemwide IT security review initiated
Research institutions present unique risk profiles:
Long retention periods
Highly sensitive identifiers
Distributed academic IT environments
Complex legacy systemsFrom a threat modeling standpoint, are research datasets receiving the same protection priority as clinical or financial systems?

A worthwhile effort to frame #ResearchSecurity in terms of researcher agency and relationality instead of compliance, although it does seem to set up the mononational researcher and institution as the baseline.

Has Clarivate been hacked? 👀 [serious question fwiw]
"In March 2024 the journal’s Scholar One site was affected. The “Journal Home” link mysteriously changed to the fraudulent site – Scholar One were unable to tell us who made/requested the change, or how they did it?"
If your journal uses Scholar One (which is an expensive error in itself), you might want to do some urgent security checks!
