Spanning the River Wear near Penshaw, Sunderland in NE England, the Victoria Viaduct, was originally known as the Victoria Bridge.
Based upon the Alcántara Bridge in Spain and it was completed on 28 June 1838, the date of the coronation of Queen Victoria.
When it opened, it was one of the largest bridges in Europe.
Although the last scheduled passenger trains to run on the line were in 1964, diverted passenger trains continued to use it.
The viaduct was still being used by freight trains up until 1991, but after that, the line was mothballed and finally closed in 2012.
The viaduct was grade II* listed in 1985 and in more recent years has become the focus of an extension to the Tyne & Wear Metro.#england #sunderland #bridge #railwayheritage #landscape #photography
