I heard even more #PirateRadio stations around #London on #FM on the way back, a few reggae/soul stations as well as various #CommunityRadio stations from #Herts and #Essex (there was good #SporadicE propagation today which helped, with the drum and bass pirates heard well into Essex, - also heard #Caroline Community Radio all the way across North Essex and into a portion of #Suffolk (before it was cut across by a French station) #RadioMonitoring
-
À cause de la propagation troposphérique j'ai pu écouter France Info sur 105,2 MHz FM dans ma voiture en Angleterre avec RDS
Because of a #tropo lift , I could listen to France Info on 105,2 Mhz FM from my car in England, with RDS..

I also brought along the Panasonic RF2400-D DSP #receiver with analogue tuning to see how this performed on 648 KHz - although there is some fading (but less QRM from Spain in daytime) the reception is impressive given the distance from the TX - its comparable quality to monitoring Caroline from Caversham in the 80s when they were broadcasting directly from the Ross Revenge (around 10-35kW ERP, it varied over the years depending how much of the equipment was actually working) #radiomonitoring
-
You can see here why from 1943 to 2018 the #BBC picked #Caversham (on the border of #Reading #Berkshire and South #Oxfordshire) as a good place for #radiomonitoring (it is high up on the Chiltern hills). The signal from Radio Caroline (250 km away at #Orfordness, #Suffolk) just about reaches here by night, and signals from a 500 kW TX which is apparently at Beijing at 8180 km away are quite strong..

there is #tropo tonight in #Northern #Europe : the pirate stream I was listening to from #Twente closed down (its midnight, the DJ sounded quite tired) and I could hear a German station in the background (they wouldn't normally deliberately cut across a licensed broadcaster, BNetzA don't like it!), and when I turned on the #FM #radio in my stairwell I can hear NPO Radio 1 on 104,4 loud and clear (but I didn't really want to listen to their boring political discourse 😆 )
-
#radio enthusiasts: there is a big #tropo lift in #UK and #Northern #Europe atm, I am monitoring French and Dutch stations loud and clear on Band II (FM) from the landing of my house with just the internal antenna of my Sangean RX (for some reason the best reception is on the stairwell next to the airing cupboard, I think an old piece of copper pipe in there (not connected to anything at either end) acts as a reflector 😉

@mcscx @cypnk I also remember the smell from working on electronics in high school, we often reused a lot of 1970s era surplus components and circuit boards, I think British Telecom donated a lot of them as where I lived we had an unusually advanced (for UK) electronic telephone exchange which was upgraded several times, as a lot of audio from #ColdWar #radiomonitoring and #surveillance went through the region due to the #BBC #Caversham Monitoring service being down the road!

Not quite #internetofshit but bad nevertheless was a type of wireless burglar alarm I discovered when #radiomonitoring a few years ago.
FSK data and *unscrambled* wide FM audio, worse, transmitted on EU-wide *wireless microphone* frequencies (mid price kit usually set up by tech skilled folk) So the unfortunate endusers have not just bugged their own house, but in a way others that (even unintentionally) are almost *certain* to receive the signals! (there are better frequencies for alarms!)

#RadioCaroline #UK starts with test transmissions from #East #England, at frequency 648 KHz MF (AM)
