Qwant s’est longtemps appuyé sur son partenaire #Bing — détenu par Microsoft — pour ses résultats web. Le moteur français développe depuis fin 2024 son propre index de recherche, avec l’aide d’#Ecosia. De son petit nom #Staan, il alimente les résultats du moteur, à côté de plusieurs autres sources.

There was a big announcement by #Qwant and #Ecosia that they are working on own search index. It was in 2024. Since then, no updates besides one vague Linkedin post.

Unfortunately, it's typical EU innovation, and the reason why we are so behind.

Nu har jag lämnat X för gott. Jag har inaktiverat mitt X-konto efter att ha slutat posta på X för tre månader sen. Kontot kommer att försvinna för gott om 30 dagar. Samtidigt har jag passat på att stänga mitt konto på LinkedIn.

I hela Norden dominerar Google sökningarna på internet med mycket stor marginal. I Europa ser det exakt likadant ut. Googles marknadsandel i är enorm (februari 2026). Här kommer en genomgång av situationen i Norden. 

I started using Xprivo as my main search engine, which is powered by the new index created by qwant and ecosia.

After all this time struggling with Qwant (who claim that 50% of their search queries goes through Staan, but definitely not mine), I can finally use some search engine that is not Google, which is simply very good.

@BuyFromEU Can you explain what that means,"implemented in France"? Is it implemented in #Qwant but not in #Ecosia? Or do both check my IP and if it's French, I get the European search index #Staan?

I was really hopeful about #Ecosia but then they, like #Mozilla, turned to #LLM and put a (really poorly implemented) AI Chat feature in their product. 😬

For a business whose goal is to better the environment and plant trees, I would have thought their ethos would be anti-AI. 🤔

Anyway, now they're collaborating with #Qwant to make a new European-based search index called #Staan to power AI products.
