Story Pile: Pushing Daisies
Six thousand, seven hundred and ten days, twelve hours, thirty minutes and zero seconds ago, the television program Pushing Daisies aired for the first time on the ‘abc’ network in the country called the United States of America. It was the work of many people, but one of them who is attributed much of the conceptual work and therefore considered the ‘source’ of the idea is one Bryan Fuller.
It is a beloved and highly regarded example of television from a time I am sure someone considers its golden age, and it is interesting primarily because of the things it could never do, which include successfully deliver a complete story before cancellation.
It is also, after a fashion, a love story, and to that end, I have means to talk about it to you, in this, the smoochiest of months.
As a spoiler warning, I’m intending to mention the plot of this show, and also tell you some things about where the plot goes and what it includes, and further to that, this is a show about cosy murder mysteries and therefore, necessarily there’s a lot of light-heartedly handled black-comedy death, so let’s call that your content warning.

Oh ja, so etwas ist fies. Ich hab dabei gleich an #PushingDaisies denken müssen. Die Serie wird auch von kino.de in einer Top 20 Serien mit Cliffhanger-Ende gelistet. Laut serienjunkies.de wurde die letzte Folge der zweiten Staffel in der Postproduktion in ein Finale geändert, was das Cliffhanging zumindest abmildert.Die Serie ist vermutlich Opfer eines allgemeinen Autor*innenstreiks geworden, weshalb die Serie in Staffel 1 längere Zeit pausieren musste und danach nicht mehr ausreichend gute Quoten bekam. Aber die Serie ist einfach viel zu gut, um sie deswegen nicht gucken zu wollen 😍

"Die phantasievoll-abstrusen Geschichten, das ausladende Retro-Design, die geradezu überbordende Sinnlichkeit an Farben, Formen, Gerüchen, Geschmäcken; der hintergründige Wortwitz, das vertraute, aber nie märchenonkelhafte Voice Over, die liebenswerten und doch mit all ihren Schwächen so herzlich menschlichen Hauptfiguren - das alles machte Pushing Daisies zu einer unvergleichlichen Serienerfahrung.Pushing Daisies schaffte es, einen wilden Genremix aus Fantasy, Krimi, Romantic Comedy und Melodram zu einem organischen Ganzen zu vereinen. Die Serie war humorvoll. Dabei brachte sie einen in der Regel jedoch nicht lauthals zum Lachen, sondern versetzte ihre Zuschauer vielmehr - egal ob durch Olives und Emersons Wortgefechte, den stoischen Gerichtsmediziner oder die kuriose Namensgebung - in einen anhaltenden Zustand glückseliger Erheiterung. Nichtsdestotrotz war die Serie natürlich auch für emotionale Momente - und sogar für eine ganze Reihe von handfesten Cliffhangern gut. Unterlegt wurde das Ganze mit dem vielleicht besten orchestralen Soundtrack, den wir seit vielen Jahren auf der anderen Seite des Atlantiks gehört haben."
