  1. Die #Polarstern ist zurück von ihrer Expedition #PS155. Vom 4.

  2. 🚢 This morning, we arrived in the port of Tromsø, marking the end of expedition #PS155 on our research icebreaker Polarstern. Before we went on the bus transfer to Tromsø, our volunteer Franzi shared her impressions.
🙏 1000 thanks to our cruise (co-) leaders 🚀Autun Purser and Jennifer Dannheim, the crew & all participants who made this cruise special! ✨ #Arctic

  4. 🐋 Today, not one, not two, but three whales graced us, quite close to the bow of Polarstern - surrounded by a flock of birds! ☺️
They were probably blue whales. #PS155 #Arctic

  5. 📸 Yesterday, we deployed our sediment profiling camera at the HAUSGARTEN Observatory. It goes into the sediment and takes a photo of the top 21 cm as a profile. Jennifer Dannheim from @awi #DeepSea Group explains that this enables us, for example, to assess the penetration depth of oxygen and 🪱 bioturbation, i.e. burrowing activities of animals inhabiting the sediments, much like earthworms in soil. #PS155 #Arctic

  6. 🌊 Time and again, Barbara Dörmbach ( [email protected] Polar Biological Oceanography) uses a hand net to collect plankton from the upper water during our HAUSGARTEN expedition #PS155.
🦠🦐Phytoplankton and zooplankton form the basis of most ocean life.
❗️There are already signs that #Arctic key species are declining and being replaced by smaller Atlantic ones as a result of #ClimateChange. This could have repercussions for the whole food web.

  7. 📷🎥 Two days ago, we deployed our #deepsea camera OFOBS again at our station off the east Greenland slope at 2500 m depth.
🪨 We saw plenty of (big) dropstones, sponges and fish 🐟 such as Paraliparis cf. bathybius and the eelpout Lycodes frigidus. #PS155 #Arctic

  8. 🚁 Yesterday, we had fair weather! So, we were able to take some flights to locate 🧊 icebergs for further investigation. It is such a privilege to witness this breathtaking beauty — our planet’s cooling house that we must protect! 🌎

  9. 🌊 Today, and on many other days of our expedition #PS155, we are using our CTD – one of our main working horses in marine science– to measure temperature, water conductivity and salinity at various depths; and in the bottles of its rosette, we collect water samples from different depths to measure various parameters. @awi

  10. ✅ Phew- next step:
