Epilog Projektu Titan. Apple sprzedaje tajny tor testowy Waymo za 220 milionów dolarów

Ponad dwa lata po oficjalnym zamknięciu prac nad autonomicznym samochodem, Apple pozbywa się swoich kluczowych aktywów drogowych.

Olbrzymi poligon testowy w Arizonie trafił właśnie w ręce Waymo. To ostateczne i symboliczne domknięcie najdroższego, niezrealizowanego projektu w historii firmy z Cupertino.

Jak wynika z dokumentów przejęcia ujawnionych przez TechCrunch, teren o powierzchni ponad 5400 akrów (ok. 2200 hektarów) w miejscowości Wittmann w Arizonie zmienił właściciela 5 czerwca. Nabywcą jest Waymo – należący do Alphabet lider branży autonomicznych taksówek. Transakcja opiewała na kwotę 220 milionów dolarów.

Sprzedającym była spółka celowa Route 14 Investment Partners LLC, pod szyldem której Apple od lat zarządzało tym terenem. Firma z Cupertino początkowo dzierżawiła obiekt, by ostatecznie wykupić go w 2021 roku za 125 milionów dolarów. Z czysto księgowego punktu widzenia inwestycja w nieruchomości przyniosła zysk, jednak w zestawieniu z około 10 miliardami dolarów, które Apple przeznaczyło na dekadę badań i rozwoju nad anulowanym „Apple Car”, kwota ta stanowi zaledwie ułamek poniesionych kosztów.

Czego dokładnie pozbywa się Apple?

Teren w Arizonie, wykorzystywany niegdyś jako ośrodek testowy Chryslera, to obiekt idealnie skrojony pod rozwój pojazdów autonomicznych. Jego główną zaletą – niezwykle istotną dla dbającego o rygorystyczną dyskrecję Apple – był gigantyczny obszar buforowy, który skutecznie chronił prototypy przed obiektywami z zewnątrz.

Sama infrastruktura badawcza zajmuje tylko ułamek całej powierzchni. Na terenie ośrodka znajduje się m.in. zrekonstruowana miejska siatka ulic (około 115 akrów), symulowany odcinek autostrady, 35-akrowy plac do testowania dynamiki pojazdów oraz owalny tor o długości ponad 6 kilometrów. Rzecznik Waymo potwierdził już, że infrastruktura ta posłuży do testowania w pełni autonomicznych systemów w kontrolowanym środowisku, uzupełniając dotychczasowe operacje firmy w Kalifornii i Ohio.

Zamykanie rozdziału

Sprzedaż toru w Arizonie to formalne odcięcie się Apple od motoryzacyjnych ambicji. Producent iPhone’ów zrezygnował ze swoich zezwoleń na testowanie autonomicznych systemów na drogach publicznych już we wrześniu 2024 roku. Utrzymywanie prywatnego poligonu pozbawione było jakiegokolwiek uzasadnienia biznesowego.

„Projekt Titan” ostatecznie przeszedł do historii. Technologie wizyjne i algorytmy uczenia maszynowego opracowane przez zespół motoryzacyjny zostały już wchłonięte przez inne działy firmy, stając się fundamentem dla pakietu Apple Intelligence oraz nowych badań nad domową robotyką. Puste tory w Arizonie były ostatnim fizycznym śladem po tym wielomiliardowym, ostatecznie zaniechanym eksperymencie.
