Later Dollo used the name Prognathosaurus. He maintained this name in the rest of his notes and writings.
In 1967, the name Prognathodon was given priority by Dale A. Russel, in his comprehensive monograph of North American Mosasaurs.
In 1989, Theagarten Lingham-Soliar and Dirk Nolf did the first comprehensive study of the original fossils
